Minor nitpick, but the bigger issue is Gerrymandering
First the nitpick: I live in this district, but I do not live in South Brookline (the overwhelming majority of the population in Brookline Precinct 14 lives north of Rt. 9). I must say that this characterization does not surprise me, however, because this district is specifically designed to marginalize me and my neighborhood, which is a nice segway into...
The bigger issue: I think that in the next round of redistricting the Commonwealth must end, to the maximum extent possible, the current system of allowing individual state representative and state senate districts to cross municipal boundaries. In an election for this level of government, it makes little to no sense for the neighborhood in which I live to be grouped together with neighborhoods that are a part of Boston (for larger elections - e.g., for federal offices - it is probably fine).
Of course I know why this was done (out of fear that the rich people who live around me might - gasp! - vote Republican, so better offset that with the super-strong and reliable Democratic bloc in West Roxbury!), but really, it just doesn't make sense. The issues that matter to people are very different across this district from the Boston to Brookline side, something I am reminded of by every piece of campaign mail I get (because they all talk about things in West Roxbury about which I know nothing and which really do not concern me or the neighborhood in which I live).
Vindication
The issues must have been different, because the fellow who won the race in the 10th Suffolk came in a distant third in Brookline.
who was first and second in brookline?
do we have voting totals? Coppinger won by a surprisingly large margin by West Roxbury, surprising because it was such a big field.
Tenth Suffolk voters, do you have a favorite? If so who/why?
When it rains it pours. So many candidates, so little time.
I've spent a few hours reading websites and on-line news articles. Here are my thoughts. There off the top of my head. Rather than get pissed at me for my opinion or errors, offer yours and give your reasons.
Matthew Benedetti
Edward Coppinger
Bob Joyce
Pamela Julian
Paul Sullivan
Kelly Ann Tynan
Kelly Ann Tynan and Paul Sullivan
I know them both and they are good people.
I do not know the others, but have heard that Julian is a little out there. But you know what they say. Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.
I do not live in this district though but if I did, I would probably vote for Tynan.
Thanks Pete
We are fortunate to have so many good candidates and yet we have to choose just one in the end. I appreciate your endorsement of Tynan.
Helpful, thank you
I was closely between Tynan and Coppinger (while considering Sullivan & Julian) I didn't realize that Coppinger supported the casinos, which I oppose.
I'm going to do some more reading tomorrow before hitting the polls!
Objective?
This sounds more like a slick way to plant your own endorsement while pretending to be objective.
Why do I say that? There is much more information for 1 candidate than anyone else has. Each candidate has at least one con except that candidate that has more information.
4 of the candidates support casinos (Tynan, Coppinger, Sullivan and Benedetti).
Sullivan's campaign has been unimpressive? He has worked as hard or harder than any other candidate. At least 3 of these candidates have worked harder than the one you graded the best.
That candidate that has more information listed has let a lot of people down with a lack of hard work. And, her bio that you wrote lists 4 seperate careers, totally seperate jobs, (plus 1 year of school) since 2002. What does she want to do with her life?
This was me writing my thoughts after
spending about three hours gathering information on a race with six candidates. I knew very little about any of them before I started. There are more than a few logic problems with what I wrote above. The reason I wrote the comment was to get feedback from other voters and so I thank you for your criticism.
Were you a Coppinger supporter or a Sullivan supporter? I think Paul campaigned diligently and at the same time did not get public coverage of his hard work or buzz about his campaign. I met him yesterday at Holy Name Schoo; and I think he is a stand up guy.
