Drivers might want to avoid the area around the Museum of Science for the next month or so

Contractors are scheduled to begin repairing the drawbridge by the museum (the Craigie bridge for those of you in the know) tomorrow, which means shutting the Boston-bound side for a month.

Eepers. Pedestrians and bicyclists will continue to be allowed to cross the bridge, but they have to promise not to snicker or even mutter "I told you so" at people in motorized vehicles.

Somerville has more info, including a link to live traffic cams you can use to route yourself accordingly and the fact that the bridge is a "twin double-leaf bascule bridge," which is, if nothing else, fun to say.

We got home last night to an answering machine message from the city of Somerville saying that construction on that bridge is going to happen in three stages between now & April of next year.

The first stage is a month, but there's way more fun to be had after that finishes.

I for one welcome our new gridlock overlords.

of bridges that are usable across the Charles! The BU Bridge is usable if you don't mind sitting in traffic for long periods during rush hour. I'm trying to find ways to take other bridges that aren't under construction.

The Harvard Bridge (Mass Ave), works for me, though I bike to work so I can get past any backed up traffic.

Not that I will be able to take advantage of this unless it drags into January, but what fun is biking in freezing temps past warm steaming piles of idling cars if gloating isn't allowed?

(yes, I know it is a joke)

it was already a mess. I really felt bad for the poor detail cop. And that's a Saturday morning! Wait until Monday, wooo-hooo!

I biked through there at 10:30 this morning, and back at 12:30, and things looked like they were going pretty smoothly by then.
