Feeding pigeons on the block

Somebody in Davis Square has some issues with an unknown neighbor:

[O]n the side street where we park, people throw tons of bread, bird seed, and other random food items [once someone left an entire plate of spaghetti] out several times a week in order to feed a flock of pigeons. As it is, it's pretty disgusting. The street and sidewalk are covered in bird poop and you risk that happening to your car if you park in the four or so spots that make up the "pigeon zone". In the last few months, the feedings have increased and the pigeons are everywhere. Now we're starting to see rats in the neighborhood, presumably eating all the food that gets strewn about.

I just don't understand people who do this. I'm sure they think they are doing something nice, but how can they possibly be unaware that it attracts rats, mice and other undesirable vermin? Especially in an urban enviroment. And, truth be told,, pigeons aren't exactly desirable either. People need to be aware that wild, urban birds are more than capable of feeding themselves.

To be fair, it could be a child. Sounds like something me and my cousins would do way back when just to see if they'd eat it.

In my former building, the maintenance guy used to throw whole loaves of bread around for birds. I'm glad I moved out of there.

Ugh. There's ALWAYS someone feeding the gross flock of pigeons at the southeast corner of the Common. I hate them and wish them ill. I contemplate spreading rat poison around there sometimes. Not seriously, of course, don't worry, but ugh, pigeons in the city are gross enough anyway and they s**t on everything around there, too. Blurg. I wish someone would shut down the couple people who do this.

Oh, a number of people do this same practice on my block in Winter Hill. It's totally crazy. I'm not the kind of guy who would "rat out" a neighbor for anything, but this situation is really not cool. It seems to be older folks who like doing this. I've actually seen mice eating the moldy piles of bread-moosh on at least one evening.
I'm discouraged to read that the LiveJournaler hasn't had luck with Somerville authorities about this. Though, I hear Joe responds to twitters/facebooks...

A neighbor of mine on Winnisimmet St. has been leaving bread and other stuffs out on the curb, and it's attracted quite a following. As if I needed MORE bird crap on my car (my street is tree-lined as well, meaning very few "safe zones" to park)...
