It was a not-especially-attractive addition to Filene's, built in the 1970s, which probably replaced some truly old buildings. The original Filene's building on Summer Street will not be demolished.
I heard (from a BRA official, no less) that the original Filene's bldg is coming down, only the facade is being saved. Kind of a shame, I loved those huge columns. If you read "devil in the white city" you may excited (and saddened) to know that that building was architect Daniel Burnham's last commission.
I just walked by during lunch and signs advertising 24 hour parking was in place of the Filene's signs under the clocks and wreaths were being hung on the façade. I think the building is going to stand in as a parking garage in the movie that they've been filming recently.

Oh, no
I looked at the pics. I can't help but feel sad. I love 'old Boston' and hate to see it disappear, piece by piece.
But this wasn't really 'old Boston'

Get out!
My wife just brought that book home from the library.
Hmmm

I'd love to see a photo of that
(you didn't happen to take one, did you?)
