Eugene Rivers vows to vote again - when the time is right

Rivers admits to and apologizes for not having voted since 1983, says the causes he supports are more important than his single vote and says he'll vote again when Boston's black and brown communities "exercise electoral discipline" and unify behind a single candidate - no doubt the one he determines is best suited for the job. You know, like Nick Collins in the recent state-senate race.

This article ran in the Herald on Monday- I guess they don't mind sharing their columnists with the Blackstonian.

Flipping to the original source. Thanks for noticing that.

Did I mention that I think that this is lame?

Gene, shut up. You have absolutely no standing in this discussion, given your (non) voting history.

Massive fail.

So, he won't vote unless the community leads him in unity? That is a follower, my friends, not a leader.

In other words, "Do as I say, not as I do."

It's hard to convince other people to "exercise electoral discipline" when a) You can't be bothered to take maybe a 1/2 hour out of your day to vote, and b) imply that you'll only do so "when...." well something happens, he wasn't entirely clear on communicating what exactly. The attitude that a single vote doesn't count is part of what cripples are electoral system. It's not just Rev. Rivers staying home discounting his vote, but thousands of other people each doing the same. The end result is a weak turn-out and the lack of balance and representation that can cause. It's all well and good to help the poor, but there's not a whole lot that will change for those communities if people stay away from the polls and don't vote for the candidates who will best represent their views and needs.

All sound and fury with no substance

He's a gift that keeps on giving. Do you Rivers, entertainment is always welcome.

Update voting technology. Make voting more convenient. Replace the Head of the Elections Division with a more up to date Head and Elect a new Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Maybe if people voted for people advocating these things they would happen. But when only 40% of the public cares enough to vote you only need to convince 20% of the population you're better then the other guy. Hardly encourages change.
