Fisher cat spotted in Cambridge
By adamg on Thu, 11/14/2013 - 1:50pm
Near Fresh Pond, Wicked Local Cambridge alerts us. But don't worry:
There have been no reports of fisher cats attacking a person or domestic animal in Cambridge.
Ed. note: This is not the Fresh Pond fisher cat. This is the fisher cat Kevin Cosby hit with his car, then had stuffed and mounted.

Looks a lot like....
... what we saw in our Roslindale backyard a year or so ago.
Could very well also be a
North American Marten.
Must have a buddy
We get one in our backyard — making God--awful racket when it's hunting or fighting, on occasion on Fairmount Hill. Apparently they truly do like to eat cats.
They can be very dangerous.

In MA you are not allowed to shoot them, nor are you allowed to discharge a firearm in a residential area (all of Boston). However you are allowed to trap them, pull a permit and get a trap. You do not wan't them making your neighborhood their new home.
Dude
Did you really just cite to the WWN? The Amazing-Bat-Child-Found-in-Cave!!!!!!!!!!!-WWN?
Haha
I don't think they were being serious, but hey you never know.
Batboy Will Save Us!
Seriously, though, the best way to keep them out from your area is to keep pets in (they are Fisher food), manage trash properly to prevent foraging and rodents (also fisher food), and report any you see to animal control, which may be licensed to come shoot the nasty evil creatures.
These guys will attack porcupines and wait for them to bleed to death from their faces. Totally evil little critters. They also howl like alien-possessed banshees and don't give frack-all about skunk spray, either.
Running over them with a car? Good move.
Fisher Cat or Raccoon?
During the summer with the windows open I'll sometimes hear a horrible noise in the middle of a night -- A very loud screaming. I've always thought it was just a raccoon. How can you tell their sounds apart?

A more alarmist view
There have been no reports because THERE HAVE BEEN NO SURVIVORS
What this means for your weekend, at 11:00

Contribution
No worries. My minor contribution.
Is it a Fisher or a F.....
I thought that we had one of these in our (tiny) yard a couple of years ago....then I realized (because of the regularity of the below-referenced noise) that the abominable noise was the young woman who lived next door greeting her boyfriend after work. Every night at 12:30 like clockwork. For weeks on end. True story.
Every time I open my bedroom window I am thankful that they moved.
New Hampshire has Toronto's
New Hampshire has Toronto's AA baseball team and they go by the fisher cats. I can't believe how vicious these things are when they're just weasels. I though all weasels did was smell bad.
Cosbyyyyyyy
Haha
Reminds me of Emo Phillips
"I caught a bass. I was dying to mount it, but people were around."
Bobcats
Well, bobcats eat fisher cats so maybe they'll be here next!
Vegan/organic Fisher Cat?
With Whole Foods and Trader Joe's there, it should a healthy, calm, yoga practicing Fisher Cat.
BTW, crossing between those two places can be dangerous, hence a crosswalk and traffic light for pedestrians. Does anyone know what the whole story is on the pedestrian who got hit and killed crossing there? Did they not push the walk button or use the crosswalk at night?
Nope
MarKKK02474,
The fisher cat sighting was closer to Aberdeen Ave, etc. than it was to Whole Foods/Trader Joe's but you are not known for leaving an opportunity to make a dumb comment untouched.
No, no idea what happened to the person that was killed by a car. No doubt you would side with the motorist regardless of the actual circumstances though since that's your M.O.
Weasels
(the inline img tag seems not to be working as documented...)

RZZZZZ!
Jeebus they're scary.
the stuffed, mounted one doesn't do justice to just how flat out badass these things are. Stay the heck away from anything that eats live porcupines for breakfast.
Fisher Cat
I saw a fisher cat crossing Craigie Street (form a yard on the corner of Berkeley and Craigie) in the very early morning hours about a year ago. I was truly suprisied to see a "critter" like him in Cambridge. Who do you notify upon such sightings?
Fisher Cat
Addendum to my last post: Last spring I spotted the carcass of a strange looking animal while exiting Fresh Pond Reservation via the Concord Avenue egress (across from the Bank of America). I had never seen anything like it before. In hindsight, I strongly believe it was a fisher cat. I do wonder if anyone else spotted it and reported it to the FP ranger; it was very easy to see because it was just to the other side of the fencing.
fisher in cambridge
Last night I definitely heard a fisher! Webt on screaming on and off from about 11p to 3a. I live along the train tracks that run through east cambridge and I think it was walking/hunting along the tracks going in and out of ppls yards. The area has a bunch of skunks, racoons, rabbits, mice, rats and most likely possums so plenty to hunt. But wow! A fisher in such an urban setting who would have thought. If its around again tonight ill have to shut my windows as it kept me up all night esp since i never heard that scream before it was so unnerving!
Fischer cat sighting
I saw what I thought was a huge weasel last night along the Charles river by Harvard Sq.! What is it? Anyone?
