First West Nile Virus-laden mosquitoes of the season found in JP

The Boston Public Health Commission reports some mosquitoes found in Jamaica Plain tested positive for the virus earlier this week.

No human cases this summer have yet been reported of the virus, which, in otherwise healthy people, normally only causes a mild flu-like infection. Still, the commission says now's the time for residents to do their part to reduce mosquito bites and breeding:

These steps include using insect repellant when outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are more likely to be biting and, when possible, wearing long sleeves and pants. People should also mosquito-proof their home by making sure that their window and door screens are in good repair to prevent mosquitoes from getting into the house.

To prevent mosquitoes from breeding, the Boston Public Health Commission advises people to turn over unused flower pots, buckets, wheelbarrows, and garbage cans; remove leaves and other debris that can clog gutters and trap water; dispose of or cover old tires; and cover swimming pools when not in use.

Of course the first one is found in the neighborhood I work in. I better put my phone on silent now, before my mother starts harassing me.

Ish, anyway. I grew up in West Bridgewater, right on the Easton/Brockton line. With horses. We were always very conscious of EEE warnings - I grew up with the fear of it before West Nile was even in the US.
