Greenway park ranger attacked by big-lobed guys on BMX bikes

A park ranger was knocked to the ground around 5:30 p.m. at Milk and Surface streets by three to five guys on BMX bikes, who then pedaled off into downtown.
They're described as white, in hoodies, all with large black gauges in their ear lobes.

I fear when we're all old and grey we're going to have a lot of old people with severely droopy earlobes from all this current 'fad' of gauging and stretching them out.

That's a pretty longstanding fad then...
I had mine stretched soon after starting HS almost 15 years ago. It is and has been extremely common in a lot of music and extreme sports driven subcultures, not to mention the piercing and/or tattoo crowd, for a very long time. Granted mine weren't super huge, they closed up to "normal" size just fine and there have been procedures for "sewing" up larger holes for a very long time. I'd actually call guys with "regular" earrings a fad before calling gauges one-I generally forget my ears are even pierced nowadays.
That aside, this "biker" gang trend is equal parts amusing and frightening.

I realized after I hit post that "fad" was a bit too 'short'. But I do mean the BIG trend is that plugs are fashionable and main stream now (vs before where it was the 'wild ones' who did that)

They might modify it to take a mail bin on the front and stretch it in back for a utility rack, but ... no.

That's courier central - complete with a random assortment of bikes that are either stripped down to nothing or hacked in varying ways to carry loads.
In street view, the couriers are saying "Hi" to the Googletruck!

We use them all the time to
We use them all the time to exchange original signatures for commercial real estate closings. To record documents with the registry of deeds, original ink signatures are required and the quickest way to get them anywhere in or near Boston is bike messenger. They're also cheaper than FedEx. And having worked across from Winthrop Square (at 75-101 Federal St) I can confirm there are always TONS of bike messengers there when they aren't delivering or picking up.

Any indication whether they intended to assault the park ranger? And if intended, why?

Im convinced there is a bike-borne crime-wave in the last week or so. The're were dozens of them blocking traffic in cambridge last weekend.

Then would bikers get full immunity to kill and maim whoever they want the way drivers do? Sure, drivers have licenses to kill, but they aren't held accountable for their actions.
Full Immunity?
Sorry, that is silly. Accidents happen, but I think life sucks for someone who hits a biker sucks, now matter how it plays out in court. And we rarely hear the full story regarding fault. Having driven, walked, and occasionally biked in Boston for a long time, all of the modes behave badly.
I don't know how a court would have adjudicated things if I had hit the cyclist who passed me on the RIGHT yesterday on a very narrow street as I swerved to avoid an oncoming car (swerving towards me), but in my driver's ed class, they taught us to pass only on the left. (And there was no bike lane). I don't hate bikes. (Pedestrians are much worse in this city). And I'm glad the jerk wasn't hurt. But if he had been, I don't feel that I would have been at fault.
* It's interesting that cyclists want to be (and I think, legally, are) legal vehicles, and make a point to "take the lane". And yeah, I agree with that. But then creating a lane between the single traffic lane and the parked cars... that's reckless.

In Massachusetts bicyclists are legally allowed to pass on the right.
However, unless done judiciously, this is a terrible practice for exactly the situation you experienced.

What would that have done?
First, even if bikes were required to be registered, do you seriously think these guys would have plates?
Next, what kind of plate can you put on a bike? Surely, nothing with numbers you could see more than 5 feet away.
Just a stupid idea that would accomplish nothing more than adding a few more cushy state jobs.
