I miss candlepin on WCVB.
I miss candlepin on WCVB. Bring it back!
A trip down memory lane
Love the headline
Actually makes me want to go bowling.
Didn't Bob Gamere get
in trouble with those little balls?
Bowling
The activity you do after you have done everything else and the only sport you can eat while you are playing. Its a different kind of sport. There is an ashtray built into the equipment.
Smoking no longer allowed in bowling alleys
Drinking is, however, at least if you go to Sacco's Bowl-Haven/Flatbread Pizza in Davis Square.
Beers, chinese pie pizza and
Beers, chinese pie pizza and candlepin. It's one of those places that makes you question the need for anything else in life
Chinese pie pizza
What on Earth is "Chinese pie pizza"?
It's a pizza with all the
It's a pizza with all the contents of chinese pie as toppings (mashed potato, ground beef, corn/peas/carrots, etc). It's fantastic.
Speaking of less commercial sports
My cousin in Germany is a top badminton player there, having won many titles, including National Champion for her age group. Not quite the same money as soccer.
Shocking
Looks like almost every single person in that particular Hall of Fame is a "local man" (or woman).
Are candlepins anywhere else?
My impression was that New England was the only place where you could bowl candlepin. Has anybody seen it anywhere else?
I've candlepinned in Canada
Fredericton, NB and Sydney NS.
The rumor is that there is a lane in Ohio.
Yes
From Wikipedia - Candlepin bowling is a variation of bowling that is played primarily in the Canadian Maritime provinces (specifically Nova Scotia and New Brunswick), and the New England states of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire,[1] and Vermont. There is also a set of lanes in the Wyoming, Ohio civic center.
I thought it was played in other Northeastern states but can't find a reference in a quick web search.
Candlepin lanes outside New England
Now that I am home from work, I did a more thorough web search and found no other states with candlepins. I could have sworn there were at one time but I guess not anymore.
New England/Maritimes thing
Except for Rhode Island and Connecticut, which tend toward a duckpin variant.
This means that an already fun game can be a great way to entertain out-of-town guests, particularly families.
I took a high-school friend and his wife and kids to Sacco's Bowl Haven/Flatbread. At first the kids were confused and adults amused, but they quickly got the hang of it.
By the time we were done, the kids were wishing that they could candlepin in Seattle. As they were staying in Portsmouth for the summer, they got to bowl several more times before they went back.
"International"
Meant to include Vermont.
Less than perfect
The thing that amazes me is that no one has yet thrown a perfect game in candlepin. Yes I know it's hard, but c'mon you'd think someone would have done it. The world record still sits at 245, held by two men.

Perfect Games have been bowled
The definition is just different. You have to mark every frame, and I am not sure if X counts.
Candlepin is a skilled game. Anyone can mark in big ball bowling.
Perfect means 300
12 strikes in a row, something that has never been done (or at least recorded).
Correct
Yes it's 12 strikes (10 frames, plus you get two extra throws in the 10th if you start with a strike.)
The scoring in candlepin is the same as "big ball" bowling with regard to the first two balls. In candlepin you get a 3rd throw that can yield up to 10 total pins for the frame, but knocking down 10 pins with 3 balls is scored as just "10"; you don't get to count pins from the subsequent frame, like you do with a strike or spare.
You're Both Correct
While a true perfect game would be 300 (never yet achieved in candlepin) it has long been a term used in the game to note a string in which all the pins were knocked down, including a 10 box with three balls.
That achievement is still very difficult and I wouldn't put it too far below a 300 in tenpin.

My favorite part
While reading a history of candlepin, they noted that the highest score (at the time) was NOT a perfect game.
Competative Fist
Spellcheck?
Nah, let's go hit the lanes.
