Only 34 "elite" runners
But sure, let's shut down all the streets extra early co they can have their own separate special running race. Spoiled brats if you ask me.
And what a pathetic waste of resources. Not to mention an insult to all the other "average" runners, who the Boston
ArroganceAthletic Association has insured will never actually have a chance at winning the race. The least the media could do is announce the names of the first "non-elite" runners who cross the finish line.I think CVS is open today

Don't go to a red sox game, the elites hog the field and 'average' players are arrested if they even try to get on the field. Im still waiting for the ESPN to announce the results of my softball team crushing accounting last week!

Right, because they can easily shut down all those roads in the milliseconds between the elite men start and the wave 1 start.
And coming from a family of "average" runners, three of whom have run Boston multiple times, I can assure you that they have no designs on winning. They run Boston because it's just something that they want to do. It's not about prize money, it's about knowing that you've trained and run well enough to qualify for the most prestigious marathon in the world. That is a victory in and of itself.
In case you haven't noticed
the "elite runners" now start their race about 9:30, and the "regular" runners still start their race about 12:00 noon. Hardly "milliseconds" in difference. And it's been that way for several years now, ever since the idiots at the BAA felt if was beneath the "elites" to actually run in the same race as everyone else.
And if you're going to have separate races, then what is so wrong with acknowledging the first, second, and third place finishers of the "everybody else who isn't important" race.

Male elite start at 10:00
Wave 1 of non-elites at 10:00
Wave 2 at 10:25
Wave 3 at 10:50
Wave 4 at 11:15
If you want to complain about the streets closing though, you have to complain about the handicapped:
Mobility impaired started at 8:50
Push-rim wheelchair started at 9:17
Handcycles started at 9:22
Have fun with that.
Plus this schedule isn't even unique to the Boston Marathon
NY and Chicago, for example, have similar ones. You have to have staggered start times for large races.

Here are the starting times for the race. They added a fourth wave recently to accommodate more runners. Is that why you think the elite runners start 3 hours before everybody else (which they don't)?
8:50 a.m. - Mobility impared
9:17 a.m. - Push-rim wheelchair
9:22 a.m. - Handcycle
9:32 a.m. - Elite women
10:00 a.m. - Elite men, Wave One
10:25 a.m. - Wave Two
10:50 a.m. - Wave Three
11:15 a.m. - Wave Four

Were you under the impression that there is a 2 and half hour lull between the elites, and the rest of the runners?
The reason the "regular' people finish so much later is because, yes, they start a little later, but also, many of these people are running up to a 4, 5, or 6 hour marathon, ie, at around half the speed that the elites are capable of.
Also, you don't just "let loose" 25,000 people at the same time. Without waves and corrals everyone except the front of the pack would be shuffling for the first five miles due to the traffic.

You realize that the elite runners start after the wheelchairs and handcycles and the elite men start at the same time as wave 1, right? What are you even talking about?
Extra early?
The streets have been shut down well in advance of the start for as long as I can remember - and I used to live less than a block off of the course. In some places, they close to motor vehicle traffic as early as the previous night.
