Japanese prime minister's plane at Logan

Dan Santry snapped Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's plane after it had landed at Logan. Abe starts a three-day US tour with dinner tonight at John and Teresa's place at Louisburg Square. His itinerary also includes a speech at the Kennedy School across the river and a trip down to DC for a speech before Congress.

Good thing that darned fire hydrant situation was taken care of. Parking shouldn't be an issue for the poor guy!

Does the plane fly with flags on top?

Do they replace the US flag with whatever country they are headed to?

Nautical tradition is that a ship flies the flag of her home country, and flies the flag of the country she is visiting as a sign of respect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maritime_flag#Courtesy_flag). Ordinary airplanes don't do this (i.e. when you fly Delta to Paris they don't put out the tricolor), but I would imagine there is, somewhere, a thick book of diplomatic etiquette, of which a chapter probably deals with how to fly flags on the airplanes of visiting heads of state.

They can't possibly leave the flags up in flight; there is a hatch in the cockpit roof of a 747; I'm sure there's a way (possibly, but unlikely involving duct tape) of mounting a tiny flagpole in the cockpit so that it protrudes up through the open hatch when the plane is on the ground.

They're pretty good at doing their job without inconveniencing other people trying to use the street.

I wonder if that's the 747 I saw on approach to Logan as we left Franklin Park early this afternoon. I'm not used to seeing a plane that large landing in broad daylight. It was hard to see the livery while driving, as well.
