Board doesn't squawk; approves West Roxbury chicken coop

The Zoning Board of Appeals today approved a variance for a six-hen coop in the back yard of Chuck Abichaker's 151 Stratford St. home.

Abichaker told the board he keeps chickens mainly to provide eggs for his daughter, who doesn't eat meat. He said the coop is located next to the garage, at least 20 feet away from the nearest property line, with a chicken-sized entrance for the birds.

A neighbor supported the coop: "I've seen the coop. It's extremely clean, very well organized and it's something the whole neighborhood can be proud of."

Both the mayor's office and at-large Councilor Michael Flaherty also supported the coop.

If she had written, "Office of the Mayor" it would need capitalization, but not "the mayor's office".

It's a subtle difference; here's one explanation about capitalization:

The capitalization of words that refer to institutions or governmental agencies, etc. can well depend on who is doing the writing and where or from what perspective. ...
 
When a title appears ABC as part of a person's name, usually before the name, it is capitalized: Professor Farbman (or Professor of Physics Herschel Farbman), Mayor Perez, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. On the other hand, when the title appears after the name, it is not capitalized: Herschel Farbman, professor of history; Eddie Perez, mayor of the city of Hartford ...
