According to the Bureau of Environmental Health website, the beaches of Revere are among the cleanest in all of Massachusetts. The central beaches at the Revere Beach and Wonderland Ⓣ stops are very clean, but it's even cleaner― both in, and out of the water— if you take the Ⓣ to Wonderland and walk a short way further north to Oak Island Beach (near Kelly's).

I didn't mean dirty like the Charles (algae or something) but the water itself is cloudy (compared to Cape Cod beaches I was at last week). The bits of seaweed are just gross. There's like always a 2-4 foot plume of chopped seaweed right at the coast. Its gross to get in and out of.I always do a mad dash when I go in or out of the water to avoid it.

And yes I know about Oak Island. I always walk up from Wonderland to there. I like it better. Less crowded than the spots near the T stations.

The Cape beaches are great this year

I was at Herring Cove on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised by two things: 1) how clear the water was; I brought goggles with me and could see for a few hundred feet underwater. 2) that not only could I could swim without turning red and going completely numb, the water temp was quite comfortable. I'll be partaking in the Swim for Life next month, which starts at Long Point and ends 1.4 miles away at the Boatslip. If the water is as warm then as it is now, I'll probably forgo wearing my wetsuit.

Herring Cove

I was there last Sunday also (the 9th). The water was CHILLY tho.. but it was only 70 degrees out so the water would feel cold.

And yes I was shocked (compared to Revere) how clean and clear the water was.

The harbor is usually warmer than the north/northeast facing beaches, so it shouldn't be that bad. Providing we still have some warm days between now and then.

Bacteria can't grow as easily in cool water. I usually get more concerned when the water is warm, honestly.

The seaweed at Revere Beach is yucky (it looks like bunches of tree roots) but harmless. I looked it up once.

I was never fond of the inbound side of Revere Beach, too many jet fumes.

The water temp was probably in the seventies this Sunday

It was slightly cooler than the pool where I normally swim (lap pool temps are usually 78°-82°). I'll be there this Thursday through Sunday and I'm doing a practice run along the Herring Cove side of the Breakwater near the Provincetown Inn at high tide on Friday afternoon. I think it'll give me a better idea as to what I'll be contending with.

I was there yesterday. Sand and water were pristine. Only 5 bucks to park and nice family atmosphere, too. Not sure about public transportation access, though.

That is AWESOME. Granted - I'm guessing that either that seal or another one eventually lost that race.

Amazing how close to shore that was. Was at Nauset Beach last week and it was closed for rip tides - but there are signs saying don't swim near the seals. Words to literally live by.

I was at Nauset a few weeks ago, seals were 30ft from shore. No one came to have them for lunch though.

The seals were a bit further offshore the day we were there - maybe 200 feet. No sharks that day. Did hear they had to close Nauset Light beach a little further to the north some time later in the week when a shark bit a seal in half in full view of everyone on the beach one morning - and the uneaten half later washed up on shore.

Quite honestly - you are probably pretty safe no matter what especially if you are not paddling a surfboard which makes you look like a seal from the shark's eye view.

Revere Beach is looking pretty good right about now
