Company claims it had a patent on storing videos, so naturally, it sues Berklee College

You've heard of Hawk Technology Systems, right? After all, they hold the patent on displaying videos on a PC and then storing them. Or, at least, they claim they do. Or did, until the patent expired last year. In any case, the company, which has filed 171 patent-infringement lawsuits since 2012 this week sued Berklee College for not paying it royalties for displaying and storing videos.

Hawk Technology Systems filed its suit yesterday in US District Court in Boston. The patent actually expired April 29, 2014, so Hawk is only seeking payments and damages and lawyers' fees for alleged infringements that occurred before then. The company describes those heinous acts:

Berklee uses a video storage and display system and methods that infringe the ‘462 Patent.

The suit does not specify the amount Berklee has allegedly deprived it of, but the suit was prepared by lawyers in both Boston and Minnesota, so it's probably lots and lots.

Ed. note. Curious about the company's offerings, we went to its Web site, which parties like it's 1999 - pretty much all that's there is a prominent "Under Construction" banner.

Patent trolls have nothing to offer. They are a parasitic business disease.

These guys should take a look at what the courts are now doing to Prenda Law for similar patent trollery, before they go forward with this. It's getting old pretty quick, and the courts are starting to come down on assholes like this (and not just the corporations' assets, but the individual miscreants behind the corporate veil) like a ton of bricks.
