The woman who loved pigeons
By adamg on Tue, 04/05/2016 - 9:59am
The Globe profiles Dorothy Steele, killed in a hit-and-run crash.
She saw beauty in every bird but especially the ones most people scorned, and she used to walk close to 10 miles a day to feed them, from East Cambridge to Inman Square, Harvard to Fresh Pond. When her legs gave out she shortened her route, leaving home in a secondhand wheelchair well before dawn, shuffling her feet and pushing with her hands.

Nice to read this touching
Nice to read this touching tribute. I hope the driver who killed her, and those, if any, who know who did it, read about her life and turn themselves or the person who did it in to police.
It really is atrocious how drivers can hit and sometimes kill pedestrians and those in wheelchairs and get away with it. There is usually very little follow up by the media regarding the progress of the police investigation to apprehend the driver. The Bentley-driving drag racers who struck the pedestrian on Beacon St. What happened to that investigation? Swept under the rug it would seem. Why is that? What about the 2 pedestrians who were struck and killed a year or so ago on Beacon St. by the 2 people in the car who lied about who was driving... are they in jail?
Some answers
According to the Globe story, the police have identified the driver they think hit Dorothy, a 62-year-old man from Somerville. No charges have been filed so far beyond "leaving the scene of an accident."
The driver who struck the young couple on Beacon Street by Fairfield is serving something like an 18-month sentence plus probation. It was the guy who pled guilty, not the woman.... you may remember some controversy over who was actually behind the wheel.
And I, too, am EAGER to know what's up with the Bentley and the BMW drivers and why we're not getting any news. I thought they'd have identified the owners of the cars, at least, within hours.
APB, thank you! As someone
APB, thank you! As someone who lives relatively close to where the pedestrians on Beacon St. were hit, I STILL see drag racing daily on Beacon St. and Comm. Ave. ...nothing has changed.

Protected identities
I'd still like to know what if anything happened to this hit-and-run driver whose name was never released anywhere I could find. He supposedly had an arraignment where he pleaded not guilty and when nobody knows his name it will be easy to let him off with a slap on the wrist.
Might not have gotten as much play as the initial story
But police did identify and charge a driver.
Wrong accident
Adam, the link in the comment above refers to that truck driver who appeared to deliberately pursue and hit a cyclist last year in Cambridge. Your link identifies the man who allegedly hit Dorothy Steele.
Is there any more info on that truck driver, or those Bentley and BMW drivers on Beacon? Thanks!
Thank you to the Globe for
Thank you to the Globe for publishing this and Eric Moskovitz for writing it. Simply beautiful. May she rest in peace.
Rest in peace, Dorothy
I used to see Dorothy in the little park in East Cambridge on Saturday mornings. I am so sad to learn that she was the woman killed in that terrible accident. May she rest in peace. Thank you for sharing that wonderful article, Adam.
