Fired worker tries to kill man who fired him, fails, shoots self to death

Updated, 1 p.m.

Authorities say a 70-year-old Framingham man fired from his job at a Cambridge health insurer returned around 7:45 this morning and began shooting at the man he blamed for his firing when he spotted the man outside.

But Kermit Hooks Jr.'s intended victim used his suitcase to shield himself outside Senior Whole Health, 58 Charles St.; he is expected to survive getting facial injuries, Cambridge Police and the Middlesex County District Attorney's office say.

After shooting his victim, 58, Hooks turned his gun on himself and fatally shot himself, police and the DA's office report.

I mean, you even included a link to the map. If that intersection is in Kendall Square, the Old North Church is in Downtown Crossing.

I have enough trouble defining Boston neighborhoods, I guess.

Your commentators are just occasionally pedantic asshats. Anyone who works in that area would call it Kendall.

Especially since you can get sued for calling things "Lechmere"...

The block is still cordoned off, btw.

Someone could detonate a pocket nuke in Boston and the survivors would come here for 100 posts about whether Ground Zero of the rubble was technically in the South End, Roxbury, or the old Clamshell District

I picture them on the Titanic pointing out to the Captain that "technically we are sinking in the North Atlantic not the Atlantic".

you should at least know that Old North is in the North End (every schoolchild knows this) and Old South is near dtx

Old North is about as close to DTX as Charles & 3rd is to Kendall.

Just cause you repeat something over and over again doesn't make it true.

1/2 mile Kendall T to Third & Charles vs 1 mile Downtown to Old North. Big difference.

Those are totally different areas of Boston, while Charles st is a couple of blocks from "Kendall sq". Reminds me of last week when GE was said to be moving to the seaport, and all the little minds fainted because they were clearly a block away.

Kendall Square is named after the "Kendall Boiler and Tank Company Building" which is at the corner of 3rd and Binney. Which is 2 blocks from this location.

Source:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kendall_Square

Google Maps says that is 0.2Mi away from this location.

Even if we are going from the T station, its .5Mi to the site and it's an equal .5Mi from the T station to the Office building calling it self "One Kendall Square" Where CBC etc is.

Besides, WTF else would you call this neighborhood?

calls it East Cambridge - http://www.cambridgema.gov/CDD/factsandmaps/mapgalleries/neighborhood (I won't link directly to the PDF map).

Is that because there isn't actually a map of Kendall Square as distinct from East Cambridge, and that official maps are seldom able to convey the nuance of local knowledge?

Has anybody seen any follow up on the murder a year or so ago in the area, where the victim was dismembered in the perpetrator's apartment? There was a big spash of coverage when it happened, then silence unless -- quite possibly -- I have just missed it.

The guy was found and arrested but the police released very little about the relationship of the killer to the victim.

Deceased is a 70 year old from Framingham, recently let go from the company. He was waiting on the victim, then returned to his car and committed suicide. From the little I saw of the DA's press conference, the victim was involved in the termination.

And how weird that the article appeared exactly one year and one day ago!

Maybe that's typical for cases like this, but one would think there would be more news about it, especially given the lurid nature of the crime. Anyway, thanks for the link.

I worked for two different companies in that building (though neither one is still located there).

As for neighborhood identification, I'd go with "East Cambridge" rather than "Kendall".

My first job after college was in the American Twine building. I loved it there.

That was one of the two companies I worked for.

It was a search engine that put the results into little folders. Or something like that. Pretty cool, I thought.

My Dad grew up there and I've got a ton of family there.

I think it is, because I think the buildings are interconnected, its the side which is on Charles St (in the same block as the American Twine Building)
