Roche Bros. to seek license to sell beer and wine in West Roxbury
Roche Bros., which already sells beer and wine at its Westwood and Downtown Crossing stores, wants to offer alcohol at its West Roxbury store as well - within eyesight of Macy's Wine and Liquors on Centre Street.
The West Roxbury Neighborhood Council hears plans for the proposal at its meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26 at the E-5 police station.
The chain would need to obtain a beer-and-wine license from the Boston Licensing Board and the OK of the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.
Also on the Tuesday agenda: Himalayan Bistro's proposal to expand into empty space next door and to exchange its current beer-and-wine license for a full-liquor license this fall.

No alliance with Macy's, huh?
Instead of building that fence between the two parking lots (and sealing up the remaining hole!), I thought the two stores would have worked something out to share customers.
booooo
I miss that break in the fence! Now it makes sense why it was repaired.

I was under the impression corporate entities could only hold 3 liquor licenses in the state? Incorrect?

The legislature and governor approved an increase in the number. Still not large, but more than 3 (anybody know the new number?)

I recall this being a compromise that the legislature adopted to hold off another "wine in food stores" initiative campaign.

The legislature has allowed a few more to be added over the past few years. Dont worry, we wont have real competition (and therefore lower prices) like most states north of the mason dixon line, but in true legislature form, we are told its better than nothing.
Sounds good to me
Places like California seem to do ok with having beer and wine for sale in their grocery stores, let's do it here.
But I wonder what they'll get rid of? Seasonal aisle? Get rid of that cafe space? There doesn't seem to be any significant wasted space.
Where?
Yeah that's what I was thinking. They have squeezed in a bunch of specialty carts with olives and fruit etc. The place is full. Maybe ditch the two aisles of shampoo/deodorant/toothpaste/aspirin etc that no one ever goes down? That's the only "wasted" space in the whole building.
