Waltham man ordered away from BPL after allegedly attacking two cops

Kevin Williams, 40, of Waltham, was arraigned today on charges of trespassing, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and assault and battery on a police officer for an incident yesterday at the main BPL library in Copley Square, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Boston Municipal Judge Thomas Horgan set bail at $2,500 and ordered Williams to stay away from the library and remain alcohol-free while the case is pending, the DA's office says.

After library staff asked Boston Police to remove Williams from the McKim building at about 11:45 yesterday morning, Williams allegedly engaged two officers in a violent struggle causing injuries for which they were later treated at Tufts Medical Center.

Innocent, etc.

The library should be a place of quiet, to read an encyclopedia or browse the out of town Sunday newspapers on microfiche. People with library cards should only be allowed to enter the BPL.

Copley Sq. BPL is a magnet for losers. Having over the years spent many hours doing research there, if I sit at a table for more than 5 minutes, inevitably some guy will decide to sit right next to me and chat me up or hit me up for money. Happens every damn time. It's not a bar. It's a library. I'm there to read and work, not to get hit on. Before someone starts bitching that it's a city and I should just shut myself up indoors if I'm so delicate: these are not regular guys; these are guys who need a shower, have all of their belongings with them in garbage bags, oversized duffel bags, etc., and are acting as if they're stoned out of their minds. If you have spent anytime there, you know the type I'm talking about. The type that hangs out near the stairwell in the central section of newer building yelling to know one who the security guards always have to tell to be quiet.

He could be from Waltham but without a home (just as a "Boston man" could be somebody who lists the Pine Street Inn as his address).

In other words someone which Waltham dumped on Boston because the town is too cheap to take care of its own and Boston hasn't found the gumption to send skinflint communities bills for social services rendered.

Hey, I like complaining about suburbs causing problems for Boston as much as anybody, but you do realize it's not all that hard to get into Boston from Waltham, right?

Someone who stays at a Waltham shelter & therefore considers Waltham "home." I'll just mention that I see plenty of men traveling on the 70 bus *into* Waltham to stay at one of the shelters there.

Homeless people use the MBTA too. It isn't like he had a Ludlow or Heath address.

BPL is the organization and the "main library" is the particular branch (well, sort of, given that it's the main library), sort of like referring to a BPS school as opposed to a private school, say, at least if you're as bureacratically minded as I've obviously become (and at least I'm not writing about ATM machines or HIV viruses!).
