In the end, his all-consuming desire for total vengeance warped what was once a good man into something other. The Count of Monte Cristo was not, in fact, good.
(The sandwiches were a UMass dining common staple and I never liked them.)
Another thing
The Count of Monte Cristo, in my recollection, did stuff like carrying around compounded drugs in a giant hollowed out emerald and owning a concubine. He's commemorated with a grilled ham and cheese made with french toast? WTF is that?
A Count of Monte Cristo should be like a fugu roll stuffed with lobster tail and truffles dusted with a blend of arsenic and cocaine or something, not a soggy grilled cheese.

Found this on a blog called "Between the Bread". There is not a whole lot of verifiable information about the history of the sandwich, as distinguished from the Croque Monsieur.
I would have suggested Monte Cristo's in East Boston
I would have suggested Monte Cristo's in East Boston but I don't think they have Monte Cristos anymore. Years ago they changed ownership and menu but kept the name. This happens in East Boston. Formerly well known places change ownership and become completely different places, but keep the old name. Other examples are Barney's and Sava's Supermarket.
No Monte Cristo at Restaurante Montecristo
It's a Salvadoran/Guatemalan restaurant with a lot of Mexican dishes on the menu. Very reasonable and very good. Still pretty much what it was when I reviewed it for the Boston Phoenix six years ago.
