Kelly provides today's most useful Boston tip: Google's Calculator lets you translate units of distance into smoots. For example, 10 miles equals 9456.7 smoots (and an ear).

Mr. Smoot had quite the illustrious career after his early start in bridge measurement. He ended up as Chairman of the American National Standards Institute, and President of ISO.
