Old mortar shell shuts Allston firehouse, intersection, school

Union Square and the Jackson-Mann School were shut this morning when somebody drove up to the Union Square firehouse with "what appeared to be an old military mortar" in the back of his car around 11 a.m., the Boston Fire Department reports.

The Captain of the firehouse made a quick determination that is was a mortar in the back seat of a car. He immediately ordered the firehouse evacuated and set up a safety zone while Boston Police were called to respond.

Around 11:30 a.m., the BPD bomb squad determined the mortar was "inert" and so safe. The fire station, the Jackson-Mann School and the intersection were re-opened after first responders packed up and left.

The guy found the mortar in his basement, wasn't sure what to do with it, so he loaded it into his car to drive it to the fire house. Apparently he didn't have enough sense to call and ask first.

... in a small town, family found a grenade in the attic of newly purchased house. They said the police officer drove away, holding the grenade out his car window, as though the sheet metal of the car door would have made a difference. Nearest bomb squad was probably 150 miles away, and you could still buy dynamite at the hardware store. Different times.

to have it checked out? Or did the car driver drive up to an emergency services station with a bomb visible in the back of their car, to get a coffee at Dunks, and not think that this would be cause for concern?

To answer a question, we would recommend to never move or touch any device one feels may be explosive. Secure and clear area. Call the police right away. Then it's stay away from it and let the Police EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Team handle.

We had a WWII widow call to report some type of explosive left behind by her late husband. Responding patrolmen called for a sergeant. The sergeant near retirement, now deceased, decided to bring it into the station causing an evacuation. Still talked about 20+ years later.

Cuz I was driving through Union Sq on Friday the 1st around noontime when about 7 police cars all swooped in at the same time in front of the Model Cafe, my light changed and I was able to go down Brighton Ave without any major delays. Was it a practice run? LOL weird
