Massive Cambridge fire caused by careless smoker

WBZ reports fire investigators have determined that at least one subcontractor working on renovation project on Berkshire Street "carelessly disposed of smoking material" in a recycling bin full of construction debris, sparking that 10-alarm fire last month.

Criminal Charges are in Order
Seriously - throwing lit ciggies around and burning down the whole neighborhood should result in jail time. Criminal negligence on a grand scale.
As with motorists who drive over people, ciggy flingers need to be held accountable for and pay for their negligence. Not meaning to blah blah is irrelevant.
Agreed. People lost
Agreed. People lost everything they own because of this disgusting person. If someone is tossing lit objects around they should be tossed in jail. Play with fire and get burnt.
Smokers always get away with
Smokers always get away with arson... I never understand why they are 'excused' for causing destruction.

Burning things down by careless cigarette disposal is certainly a bad thing. But it's not arson -- that requires intent.
Motorists who fling lit cigs.

How about lit cig flinging motorists? In the past 6 months I've been struck twice by lit cigs tossed by drivers high on nicotine. It gives them a sense of superiority.
Put it back in their car for them
....if it's at a red light, that is.
These motorists should be held responsible for negligence just like the construction worker, if they cause any damages.

National Fire Protection Association says:
"In 2011, there were an estimated 90,000 smoking-material fires in the United States.These fires caused 540 civilian deaths, 1,640 civilian injuries and $621 million in direct property damage. One out of four fatal victims of smoking-material fires is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire."
If I'm reading that right...
75% of all people who died in cigarette-caused fires were the smoker who didn't extinguish the cigarette or cigar.
That number seems high to me. I'd have guessed more like 50%...

If these subcontractors get charged? If so, that's one trial I'd love to follow, and I'm sure others will feel the same way.
