The first time I tried to attend this re-enactment, I found it impossible to see much because other visitors had surrounded the entire Battle Green with ladders and stepstools. It was very frustrating.

After the 2013 Marathon bombing, the town of Lexington prohibited people from bringing these things to the event, which makes it much easier for ordinary people like me to see it. (Even if I owned a ladder, I'm not going to try to carry it 8 miles on my bike.)

Most of the ladder bringers walked there from their houses with the ladders on top of wagons. Lots of people bike to this, too - we do. You cannot park near to it.

When I brought my father, who had mobility challenges, people were extremely nice and made space for him to put his chair right up front. They also used to have an area for kids only - but the behavior of people who insisted that their 9 year old could not possibly be without them for a few seconds may have put an end to that (my then 7 and 10 year olds were told to meet us at the statue after and dove into the kid pit).

The man on the right with the cowboy hat and D-(fence) sign is Chris Dempsey, the one who led the charge to throw the Boston 2024 proposal into the harbor where it belonged. A true patriot.
