Starbucks a tipping point for Charlestown?

The Charlestown Patriot-Bridge surveys the populace about the impending arrival of the neighborhood's first Seattle-based coffeehouse. While some can't wait, others worry about the chainification of the neighborhood. Peer pressure is being applied:
Some of my friends made fun of me for liking Starbucks. The Town is changing though. We have a T-Mobile store here now and a Whole Foods. Things are changing and I say go with the flow.

Ugh! They had this whole debate in Southie like it was a matter of national security. If you don't like starbucks, don't go! A café nero opened on F street and no one said boo. You are seriously stuck in the 90s if you think starbucks is the ultimate sign of gentrification. Check your 1,000/sq. foot real estate prices first.

The real problem is that the landlord went with Starbucks over a proposal by a Charlestown local and fixture in the community that would have added so much more value with a restaurant than Yet Another Coffee Shop.

... does Dunks provide anything of nutritional value to the neighborhood? They are a factor in increasing obesity and other health issues in Charlestown. Starbucks will do the same. I say boot them both out!

You don't know anyone who has end stage renal disease and has to undergo dialysis treatments several times a week, do you? Because if you did, I suspect you wouldn't have made a comment that, while I'm sure was intended as a joke, was in very poor taste.

Starbucks is a better employer
I have one kid working for Starbucks, the other for Dunks. Notes have been compared.
The benefits and raises at Starbucks are enough that my older guy plans to continue to work there if he can't line something up immediately after graduation. It will help him stockpile money for his own apartment when he finds a permanent gig.
We got his 401K package in the mail yesterday.

Yes, they have a 99 in Charlestown, and it was the site of a gangland murder. The gang who couldn't shoot straight. They were arrested by the detail officer working a traffic job out in front of the restaurant. Three nuns and an off-duty police officer, patrons of the restaurant at the time, were eyewitnesses and testified at the trial.
Maybe I went at the wrong
Maybe I went at the wrong times but my experience with Zume's was that it was always packed and the line was always too long... it seems like maybe there was a need for another non Dunks style coffee place in the area and Starbucks jumped in when other local people stayed away because they did not want to compete with Zume's. I've yet to have anything there, every time I have tried the line was too long, so my sense is they may be ok even with the increased competition.
When Starbucks came to Davis Square ...
... they opened right across the street from locally-owned Diesel Cafe, just a few months after Diesel opened in 1999. People expected Diesel to succumb but that did not happen, and both places do good business today.

That was pretty much the heyday of the Someday Cafe, too. Plenty of business to go around.
