State-senate battle won't be between state reps from South Boston and Dorchester again
By adamg on Fri, 02/02/2018 - 3:59pm
The Dorchester Reporter reports that state Rep. Nick Collins (D-South Boston) will run for the seat he couldn't win in a battle four years ago against state Rep. Linda Dorcena Forry (D-Dorchester). But state Rep. Dan Cullinane, who took Dorcena Forry's place in the House, announced today he will run for re-election in the fall rather than the Senate seat this spring.

Not so fast
Representative Evandro Carvalho will run for the seat and he represents parts of Dorchester.
Already ugly on social media
with people from South Boston tweeting about getting 'our' seat back.
That’s not ugly
With a seat like this one, things can get a whole lot uglier.
Give it time
I mean, I'll be generous to start and assume that 'our seat' refers to the neighborhood and not the ethnicity of the candidates. But we'll see.
I'll put it to you this way
If the only candidates were Collins and Cullinane, yes, they would still be talking about it being "their seat."
My mum grew in St. Margarets, and yes the area was described by the parish. The Irish who lived there were viewed skeptically by the Irish a mile away in Southie, so ethnicity is not the driver others might think it is.
Right, but....
I worked in South Boston in the 70s to the 90s with a lot of guys from Southie. They referred to me and other white people from Dorchester as "hicks"(even though my grandmother was from Southie). On the other hand they always referred to black people with the "n" word, and boasted that that "n" would never be allowed to live in Southie.
A lot has changed in Southie, but a lot remains the same. The reference to "our seat" refers both to Southie 's geographical boundaries but is also is a proud statement of racial purity by others
Let me put it to you this way
How do the people of Southie react when a white person from the South End runs for the District 2 City Council seat?
I'm not saying that there aren't people in Southie who are a bit more racist than average, but still.
UPDATE
Evandro Carvahlo of Dorchester is officially in, in email to supporters today.
