Tarek Mroue got lost trying to deliver a washer and dryer and now he's dead

Mroue

Tyrone Worrell, 39, of Dorchester, was ordered held without bail at his arraignment today on charges he fatally shot Tarek Mroue (right) in a road-rage incident on Winthrop Street in Roxbury Wednesday evening, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Worrell was arrested not long after the shooting and had originally been scheduled for arraignment on Thursday, but that was put off for a day after he told police he'd managed to swallow "a quantity of heroin" and he was rushed to a hospital for possible treatment, the DA's office reports.

According to the DA's office:

Evidence developed during the past two days suggests that Worrell was involved in a dispute with another motorist on Wednesday evening. That dispute continued on Winthrop Street, where Worrell allegedly slashed the tires of the second vehicle. Worrell then allegedly left the scene and returned a short time later. He allegedly produced a firearm and fired multiple shots into the vehicle, striking and killing Mroue.

A witness at the scene gave police a description of the assailant and his vehicle. Minutes later, Boston Police spotted that vehicle about a half-mile away and took him into custody.

According to a friend of the family, Mroue, a father of three young children, was looking for a particular address to which he planned to deliver the washer and dryer in the bed of his pickup:

They tried asking people for directions and were ignored. The suspect was behind them and started beeping. Words were exchanged and the suspect got out of his car and stabbed one of their tires and took off. So, the people in the truck called AAA and waited. The suspect came back, knowing the truck wasn't going anywhere, with a gun and began shooting. He was hit three times, once in jugular. This is a horror show for this family and their three young children.

Innocent, etc.

I didn't know him, but my heart aches for his loved ones.

It's hard to think of what else to say that won't sound trite or worn out in the face of all the hate that seems to be screaming around the world right now.

Let the people you love know it, everyone.

Who ever did this to you should be punished and his place is in hell. You were always thoughtful and trying to help your family and friends. God bless your soul. You are former and we follow.

One qualm I have about reporting of "-rage" incidents that end in violence is that in the effort of avoiding victim-blaming, and painting the scene as black-and-white, it misses the key fact that it's usually both sides that escalate the situation.

In this story, the headline makes it sound like all the victim was doing was delivering laundry equipment and minding his own business. The family statement glosses over the escalation of the rage saying "Words were exchanged". Both misportray the way things escalate, with two egos manically trying to outdo each other.

No, my point is not to excuse the actions of the perpetrator. The point is that when we keep reading about these events like they're black and white, we fool ourselves into thinking we're the good guys and other-people are the bad guys. That's a form of hypocrisy and is not helpful.

up
Voting closed 0

There is no both-sides here, no hypocrisy and I'm kind of stunned you would think the victim might have deserved what happened.

Two men got into an argument, yes. But only one pulled out a knife, then decided that wasn't enough and so went and got a gun and shot the other man repeatedly, according to the police account. That is first-degree murder and if he's found guilty, he will be sent away for the rest of his life and he will deserve it.

I don't see where the above comment used, or even implied the word, "deserved."

It was pointing out that the framing of the story changes people's perceptions considerably.

"Two guys get into argument, fight escalates, one shot."
"Man shoots man after words exchanged."

These two headlines could describe the exact same hypothetical "road rage" incident--but each clearly frames the story very differently. You're a journalist, don't try to tell me you don't see this.

There was no argument. The victim never got out of the car. Whatever was said was not in a nose-to-nose, hypermasculine freakout. There was no fight. There was shouting out of a window. For most people, that doesn't even constitute a "you'll never guess what happened to me today" story.

The victim was a sitting duck because he didn't feel the urgency to leave. The "incident" was nothing, a blip. He didn't feel threatened. He didn't call 911. Because he was sane and normal.

This wasn't a "road rage" incident". If it's being framed as such that's in order to break it down for mass consumption. The bottom line... This was a guy with a fragile ego who chose to correct a slight with a gun. Plain and simple.

up
Voting closed 0

If the escalation took place during the initial argument, I’d agree. The fact is one “ego” left the scene, retrieved a firearm and returned to murder a sitting duck. That is as black and white as it gets.

up
Voting closed 0

Plain and simple. I'll parse it out. Words were exchanged. I could give you quotes. Nothing that rises to the level of what would be considered "fighting words". When the accused plunged his knife into that tire, he knew what he was going to do. Do you know what the victim was planning? Calling AAA, getting his tire fixed, finishing his job and going back home to his three kids.

Spare me this nonsense.

So...they had words...guy slashes their tires.....goes and gets a gun and returns to kill a man....perhaps you should be talking about incidents that don't "re-escalate" by one party who couldn't let it go. I watched TK grow up and he was a kid who cared about others and grew into a men who was the same.
Don't take me the wrong way, I agree it takes two.....but......not this time. Clearly the ego of one is so fragile that he had to get even.....even after he had....without killing anyone.
Then there's the gun issue............... :-(

up
Voting closed 0

That not the story at all. The man with the gun was an animal lover who took a young man's life for his own personal issues. The man that passed away did not exchange words at all. Please stop when you don't know facts. Tyrone can sit in jail knowing he took a sin brother father husband and friend. A good man for no reason. Hope he rots where he is

What is wrong with people? He came back with a gun, I hope that's enough for first degree murder and he goes away for life.

The fact that the offender retreated, returned with a firearm and then shot and killed the delivery man indicates that the shooter/killer was the cowardly one, and the one who's to blame in this whole horrible incident. The guy with the firearm committed first-degree murder, and he deserves to be sent to jail for life, with no parole.

It's hard to believe that someone who would commit murder over traffic issues could even make 39 years old still on the street. Going to get a gun and coming back to kill certainly looks like first degree murder and well deserving of life without parole.

up
Voting closed 0

Committing murder over traffic issues happens a lot more often than many people realize. Witness the 20 year old woman in Lowell, MA, who shot and killed a young man for a pretty similar traffic issue.

Some years ago, a driver in Philadelphia shot and killed another driver who'd inadvertently cut him off.

These incidents happen more frequently than many, if not most people realize.

Are there any coherent statistics on this? Hard to know if they are more frequent or less frequent without actual surveillance data.

I cant believe a good man like TK was taken away like this. Heartless, cold and killed like a dog by a crackhead! Tk worked hard everyday for his kids thats all he talked about and thats all he cared about! Those babies are gonna miss out on such an awesome Dad all over a damn road rage dispute. I still can't believe what I'm reading. He is resting peacefully with his late Mom I'm sure. I hope the killer rots in jail!

I can't say how much I hate it when people say they want someone to "rot in jail." No one rots in jail. They sometimes live a better life than they had before. I do prison ministry and believe me when I say some of the people there are far better off there than on the outside. Regular middle class people who comment on blogs like UHub wouldn't be, but sociopaths who would slash the tires of someone on the street, go get a gun, shoot that person three times, and then swallow a bunch of heroin are likely happier in prison than outside. Plus, every dollar you and I and 8 others on average pay in taxes to the state each year will now be spending that paying for his housing, food, clothing, health care and entertainment.

I know I'm in the minority here but there is no doubt that this person should not live long past his sentencing. Some people should just be destroyed. If society is OK killing an 8 month old fetus because the mother doesn't want it, society should be OK with the idea that this scumbag should be aborted as well. He wouldn't be missed.

And one I met with wished for it. Not sure I helped him, but at least I heard his story and he said he felt better about telling someone about it.

A person who does ministry of any type should never think nor respond with that comment. Smh

If the above comment wasn't one of the finest Internet trolls (in the classic sense of the word, someone posting intentionally provocative comments to get a reaction), I don't know what is.

The post veered from left-wing/liberal stereotypes to right-wingnut clichés in the span of two paragraphs, and then concluded with an irrelevant dig at pro-choice people. All it was missing was something about the Second Amendment. F*cking comedy gold.

If you’re ministering as a Christian, you’re doing it wrong.

up

Why? How am I wrong? Yes, I believe some people commit crimes which should result in their physical end. The soul has no end. I am willing to meet them in the place where they are confined and if they are willing I will discuss my Christian walk. I have not met with death row prisoners as they are not available, but I have met with several long timers who have admitted they are better off where they are than outside. Why don't you go and emotionally meet with a prisoner before you criticize me?

I'm sure you feel justified, but you have no idea what you are talking about.

Not exactly Christ-like. The hypocrisy of people who claim to be Christian and support the death penalty at the same time is astounding.

up
Voting closed 0

Seriously, why?

Please enlighten me.

up
Voting closed 0

Read the Bible. Seriously.

Besides the part in Exodus where God commands “thou shalt not kill”, there’s that whole thing in the New Testament where one of the key figures (I cannot remember which one) says things like “turn the other cheek” and told one of his followers to sheath his sword.

St. John Paul II often discussed the “culture of life”. Opposition to the death penalty is a part of it.

up

..Christ himself is the most famous victim of an unjust death penalty. Though I suppose if it hadn't happened at all, Christianity would've been relegated to the dustbin of history.

This:

If society is OK killing an 8 month old fetus because the mother doesn't want it, society should be OK with the idea that this scumbag should be aborted as well. He wouldn't be missed.

is completely off the subject at hand. The guy who killed the delivery man with a firearms deserves to go to jail for life, plain and simple, because he's a cold-blooded killer who knew exactly what he was doing. The death penalty is not the answer, because a society that wishes to become civilized does not solve the problem of heinous crime by putting its perpetrator(s) to death.

I'll also add that aborting a fetus and ending a pregnancy is not the same thing as executing a criminal. The fetus is not a person until the day it develops into a full-term baby and is alive and outside the womb.

up

One of my children was born at 23 weeks. He survived and is a thriving teenager today. A woman is permitted to abort children up to term--40 weeks. That is as disgraceful as what took place in this crime.

up
Voting closed 0

1. YOU NEED A COURT ORDER to get an abortion after TWENTY weeks. (varies by state)

2. WOMEN DON'T HAVE ABORTIONS FOR FUN

3. IF there is an abortion performed in the third trimester IT IS PERFORMED BECAUSE SOMETHING WENT VERY VERY VERY VERY BADLY WRONG.

4. It is also technically an abortion when THE FETUS HAS DIED ALREADY. Not removing that deceased baby can have serious and extreme physical and mental consequences for the mother - not that you care.

Have you ever sat with a friend who is going through this nightmare? Of course you haven't. You don't have a clue. You need to get one or STFU.

To surviving family members and those who knew and loved Mr. Mroue, Tarek; my prayers and deepest condolences. I did not know Tarek and at this point in time it doesn't matter, What I do know he was a human being. And that's good enough for me.

From all non Court accounts, I'm understanding this was road rage.

Also let it be known this is the second incident of road rage in which someone was murdered Within a week this month. I tell my dad all the time not to mean mug other drivers, when you believe you have been wrong.

Everybody please show more love when you're driving. Better yet. JUST SHOW MORE LIVE UNIVERSALLY

Among many souls their is no fear,
Muscle up a few words,
For reasons no one can hear,
Make the meaning of life clear,
Seeing, smiling and awaiting
Heavens never an illusion, it's only if you have time to wait,
What's the rush,
Everyone is touched,
Sends chills through your spine,
Forever grounded spiritually,
Expressions of love that's lost'
Then will be found,
In the course of mourning through seasons,
I will pick up the scatted tears, and cleanse the path through the sorrow,
And read them aloud for eternity,
Waiting, in a glimpse you will catch me watching, as my figure fades away,
For my soul hasn't passed on yet,
To see you, for you to smile and await with me,
For we haven't arrived yet,

I just want to send my condolences to Mr. Mroue’s family & friends my heart goes out to you all. The man that is accused of this awful crime is my child’s father & although I do not know exactly what happened or why because I wasn’t there I’m not going to pass judgment I do know that 2 families & many loved ones are suffering especially the children of both men. Tyrone is a father of 3 children as well & his children will miss out on a great man just like Mr.Mroue’s children. It’s a really sad situation my child said to me today why are people so quick to wish death on my dad he’s not evil they weren’t there they don’t know exactly what happened except what they’ve read. Yes a man’s life was taken & lives are changed forever because of a very bad decision and reaction NO ONE IS PERFECT & nobody knows what happened besides what has been reported but I do pray for him & Mr.Mroue’s that the right justice is served please people choose your words wisely some children will read these comments. GOD BLESS

It doesn’t matter what was said during the argument. This “great” man left the scene, got a gun and fired his gun several times. He killed a man for no reason other than he was a sick f***. I’m just upset that mass. Doesn’t have the death penalty.

YOU WERE THERE SO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED RIGHT SMDH JUST BECAUSE THATS WHAT WAS WRITTEN DOESNT MEAN THATS ACTUALLY WHAT HAPPENED JUST LIKE I STATED JUST BECAUSE ITS REPORTED DOESNT MAKE IT TRUE... WHO ARE WE TO PASS JUDGMENT ON ANYONE... TWO FAMILIES LIVES ARE FOREVER CHANGED BY THIS SITUATION I PRAY FOR MR.MROUE’S FAMILY FOR FORGIVENESS OF TYRONE & I PRAY THAT TYRONE IS REMORSEFUL & I KNOW IN MY HEART THAT HE IS NOT AN EVIL MAN HE MADE A TERRIBLE HORRIFIC DECISION THAT DAY IDK IF HE WAS FEARFUL FOR HIS OWN LIFE IDK WHAT HAPPENED BECAUSE ALL THE FACTS HAVENT BEEN DISCLOSED AS OF YET ALL I DO KNOW IS GOD HAS THE FINAL SAY AS TO WHAT IS GOING HAPPEN...BE BLESSED

Look, the father of her kid is in jail, and for the charges he faces he'll be there for the rest of his life if convicted. That means her son will only be able to see his dad in prison. That really sucks. Does it suck as much as some guy being executed for the crime of getting lost? Heck no, but in looking it from her perspective, life is going into a spiral for her and her kid, so perhaps we should allow her some liberties that most of us wouldn't get.

And perhaps she might think to no longer answer comments here, since the guy she is kind of, sort of, in a very minute way defending seems to be a sociopath to the rest of us. Hopefully we are wrong. Hopefully he will spend the rest of his life in remorse. Hopefully he can teach his sons not to use his temper as an example. But yeah, the guy did drive home, get a gun, return, and shoot someone to death.

up
Voting closed 0

There's no way this guy suddenly flipped like a light switch and got out of his car to yell at someone just because they were driving slowly, knifed their tire, drove away, got a gun, drove back, and executed a person. That's not something you do unless you have anger issues and think weapons and physical violence solves your problems.

At the very least he kept a gun around the house (locked unloaded in a safe, I'm sure...).

Her defense of him is tone deaf. It's self-defensive. She couldn't possibly have been with someone so crazed and/or cruel, right? He only yelled before, etc. It begs credulity and offends all of us. She needs to deal with accepting her situation without trying to impose her justifications on the rest of us.

Did he have a license for this gun of his? If not, he was already breaking the law...with small children in the house.

Honestly. And not in the bubble of in fact not being in her shoes.

And not his shoes, since I think there is a general consensus about that.

If you were in the shoes of the deceased mans family, how would you feel reading her posting?

Hence my advice for the woman above.

But yeah, I would also give those who knew the deceased a wider berth in posting and responding, with the hope that the whole website does not suffer because of it.

Nothing like murder, but I've had family do seriously stupid, criminal things before.

I never once defended their behavior. In the few times when I've personally had any tangential involvement, I've even tried my best to express my support for the other person. Look, we all likely know someone that has lost control of themselves (though not usually to this degree obviously). But the answer isn't to instinctively defend them if you know damn well what they did. Be there for the victim if they're even willing to listen...otherwise, be humble and do what you can to help your loved one get through their issues with the least harm continuing to be done.

But posting here and caps shouting about his character and how well he's raising your kid(s) is seriously offensive and the wrong answer every time.

It's taken me a couple of days to pull myself together enough to comment on this.

I used to live next door to Mr. Mroue, and his father and granmother. He was a kind and helpful young man to me, a single mother with a small child struggling to make ends meet. He would help me carry groceries up the stairs, knocked on my door in bad weather to ask if I needed or wanted him to pick up anything while he was out so I wouldn't have to bundle up the baby and take her out in it, and once even drove both of us to the doctor's when my daughter got sick.

When I mentioned offhandedly that one day I would like to get a cat, he asked me if I was looking for a particular kind of cat, because he knew someone who needed to find homes for kittens. I wasn't picky, I just wanted one that was healthy. A few days later there was a knock on my door and there was Mr. Mroue, with two kittens, one for me and one for himself and his family.

I watched him become a new father, and I saw how happy he was with his new family. I could see he would be a great father to that child (and any others he'd have.)

We lost touch when we all had to move after our building was sold for condo conversion, but I'll never forget the kind young man from next door who was so willing to help out his neighbors.
