Target gets in trouble for way it tried to stave off trouble from underage college students looking to buy beer
A week after it got a three-day liquor suspension for letting young'uns buy beer, the Target at 1345 Boylston St. was back before the Boston Licensing Board, this time after BPD detectives found a security guard out of uniform and packing a very visible gun with an expired Boston firearms ID card - and without first notifying the city he would be on duty as required.
A Target attorney told the Boston Licensing Board the man's presence in the store on March 3 was a mistake. The store had asked a security company to provide a guard in an attempt to stare down and scare off under-21 shoppers from trying to pick up some 30-packs, but specifically asked that he be in uniform and that he not show up with a gun. Instead, he showed up with a gun but without a uniform, attorney Joseph Devlin acknowledged.
Devlin predicted this will be the last time the store will be before the board for underage violations, because a new "super scanner" the store now uses has proven very effective at ferreting out the under-21 set. He said the system caught 35 fake IDs in its first three days of operation. More proof is in the aisles leading up to the registers equipped for liquor sales - kids take one look at the scanners and just drop the booze they'd been planning to buy in those aisles, he said.
In addition to last week's punishment for the way a couple of Wentworth students got through a register line with beer, the store had gotten a one-day suspension after two Northeastern students were nabbed by BPD detectives in the process of buying some Natty Ice and vodka in December.
The board decides Thursday whether the security-guard incident merits any punishment.

Target is very big on surveillance. Even has a forensics lab
I wouldn't buy alcohol at Target. The corner store isn't going to add it to my behavioral profile.
Online alcohol purchases
You are profiled and your profile is sold when purchasing alcohol online or through an app.
Target Forensics
It's so good and so effective, many police and FBI cases are sent to Target Labs for investigation.
Who knew?
Precognition
Target is the national leader in precognition. They're now working on a system where upon entering you're diverted directly to the registers to pick up what you were going to purchase.
If the only knew
If they only knew There way around the city, there's a Liquor store on every others block in Mattapan, Dorchester, Roxbury & J.P. with wonderful adults out front to go in and buy for you if your underage. For your spare change or maybe a $1. And don't worry there's absolutely zero security in the whole area. It's a gift and a curse.
exactly!
That's what I used to do in college "Hey, can you get us 3 40s and keep the change?"
Jamaica Liquors, 1999
Asked a passing gentleman to buy us a case of beer. He returned with two bottles of MD 20/20, because it was cheaper. Beggars can't be choosers.
ID Database No Thank You, Target
The *third party* scanner used at TARGET captures an image of a customer’s DRIVERS LICENSE or PASSPORT which it matches and retains in its DATABASE with other information on the individual.
I’ll show my ID and make my alcohol purchase at the independently owned corner liquor store on Queensbury Street.
Ah yes coldest beer in town
Ah yes coldest beer in town
Man, that place is great.
Man, that place is great. Their beer is so cold. Probably the coldest in town!
I try and avoid liquor stores
I try and avoid liquor stores that use those scanners. Why would I want a non state entity to have a copy of my license on file for something as simple as a beer purchase.
I understand why companies are using them, but nah, I will take my money elsewhere.
Those darned kids
Really? 35 fake IDs in 3 days?
Perhaps if we focused more on those trying to use
fake IDs, and less on finding excuses to punish businesses who unwittingly accept them, we might begin to discourage people from using them in the first place.
Time to acknowledge that use of a fake ID for what it is - a CRIME, and not a "rite of passage."
Not a good idea
These college kids should be concerned about there grades and be studying for exams. Underage drinking is a bad idea!!!!
Not all college students are underage
My son just graduated and he's been legal for a year and a half.
Yeah, it makes you grow up to
Yeah, it makes you grow up to make horrendous grammar mistakes like confusing "there" with "their". ;)
Check All Armed Security Companies
I highly recommend regulating law enforcement officials should review all armed security companies bad service the City of Boston for compliance.
And I've seen other individuals walking around the City without being in the uniform but are armed with Firearms we need to look into this.
18 year olds should be treated as the adults they are
The drinking age should be 18. College students should be able to legally buy their beloved Bud Lights and grossly overpriced 'premium' vodka at Target or anywhere else. We, as a society, need to stop babying 18-25 year olds.
So what are you doing about it?
It's a matter of legislation. Are you trying to convince your members of Congress to work on this?
I'm well past the legal drinking age
But, I'd encourage the 'kids' to get their act together and lobby their reps. Now, young adults don't exactly vote in large numbers, so it might have to bea multifacted campaign.
i do vote, and I'd have no problem lowering the drinking back down to 18.
