Walpole newspaper shuts offfice after woman threatens to shoot employees there

David Robichaud at WBZ reports a woman upset the Walpole Times wouldn't publish an article threatened to shoot up its office.

The Walpole Times reports the woman, living in Amherst, threatened harm against a reporter who asked her to leave him alone - and anybody else she could find.

The Times's parent company, GateHouse Media, shut the Times office until it can hire a security guard. The woman formerly worked as a reporter herself, for the Worcester Gazette and Worcester Magazine, MassLive.com reports.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the Chief Executive labeling the press "the enemy of the people." Nope. Just a coincidence.

It would eventually come. Read the article, this lunatic has ties to the parent company and worked in the industry.

If you check out her twitter, I'm pretty sure she's manic.

Or is modern American society bursting at the seams.

Mass shootings
Opioid crisis
Higher and higher suicide rates
Police shootings
Protests
Add your item here______________

all of this always exists, and I know we have more exposure to these things these days because of the 24 hour news cycle- but it does seem that the pressures of life are bringing out the crazy a whole lot more.

We agree on something! (actually we agree alot)

But yes I agree.. I am kinda wondering if we're bursting at the seams.. so much going on today. I often thought it was because of social media and how we're always connected, but man everything in the past few years has seem on a mega uptick.

As a kid and a teenager, but I paid attention to what was going on. The country was much more divided then than it is now, with various demonstrations, protests, and riots a nearly daily event.

Also multiple domestic terror groups robbing banks, kidnapping people, blowing stuff up, multiple high profile serial killers & rapists, serial bank robbers separate from the domestic terror groups, murderous or suicidal cults, rampant pollution, arson, open mob wars, massive vandalism and littering, moral panics over porn, comic books, D&D, Satanism.......

Today's fears pale in comparison to the late 60s and utter decay of the 1970s and early 1980s. 1968-1982 was a nightmare of decay.

Over medicated and under educated.
Inclusion is a drug. The lack of inclusion is a powder keg, think incels.
No meaningful connection to people, or the environment around us.
The food is borderline poison.
People don't read enough.

I'm sure there are many other causes and triggers as well but these are some of the things I've noticed.

GateHouse itself could be a trigger. As an ex-GateHouse freelancer who had to dun them repeatedly for payments owed (and who never had his queries about further employment answered by new editors after his old editor had been unceremoniously let go due to downsizing) I can understand the desire to shoot someone there.

(I realize "trigger" is an unfortunate word when talking about "shooting" someone, so I'd like any authorities reading this to know I don't own a gun and never have owned one. Thank you.)

Considering the climate we currently live in, and that five people from a newspaper were just killed last week.

Inclusion is a drug. The lack of inclusion is a powder keg, think incels.

Incels don't suffer from lack of "inclusion". They suffer from an antisocial world view that dehumanizes others. It's not the job of the rest of the world to adjust to their world view.

In my mind incels become incels to be including in something as they are otherwise excluded from society, in their minds anyway.

America was more violent in the 80s.

“Police shootings” have been statistically proven to be non-existent. Like the odds of a shark eating you.

There was a crack epidemic too, but you might not have cared because it didn’t involve white people.

You might just be a little gullible.

You ought to explain what you mean by that. The shark bit doesn't clarify it.

I'll step in. What he or she means is that like most (but not all) sharks, he or she does not know anything about statistics.

The only shred of truth in this is that police shootings happened even before lots of people got cell phone cameras, and that was one of the dangers of the 1980s, too.

My statistical risk of being murdered by the police is very low, because I'm a middle-aged, middle-class white woman. That doesn't mean the police don't shoot unarmed children, or drivers who do everything that the defenders of police shooting tell us they "should" do, like obeying arbitrary orders and keeping their hands in sight.

Funny you mention that the crack epidemic mostly affected black people, because so do the police shootings you're calling "non-existent." If "rare" equals "non-existent" or "unimportant," there are no Supreme Court justices (there are only nine in the entire world) and we shouldn't pay any attention to what they do.

If one understands and/or has a working knowledge of our history, our country as well as the world (in general) one will see that each generation had it "horrors". Here is a mix tape: Slavery, Colonialism, civil wars, labor riots, Jim Crow, Depression Era, 1960s: riots, Vietnam, assassinations, French and Indian War, American Revolution, Holocaust, Genocides...do some reading and you will find this world is not immune to "horrors" as long as we have human beings.

Too many factors -- comparing it to previous eras is not even apples and oranges but more like apples and Wankel rotary engines. People have added the examples of the 60s, 70s and 80s, and there are many more. The difference now (as contrasted especially with the late 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s) is that more people are aware of it and less able to ignore it in comfort. Not having a military draft alone is a huge factor.

Threatening to commit a crime was against the law in Massachusetts long before President Trump, as was workplace violence.

I think the term "going postal" was coined after a number of disgruntled postal workers became violent in separate cases across the country in the 1980s.

A new low to blame President Trump for garden variety threats at an obscure MA newspaper. There is no such thing as a "routine call" but I'm sure the Walpole Police were well able to handle this one.

Did he, or did he not, label the press as "the enemy of the American people?"

Follow-up question: How do you think some of his less-than-stable followers might interpret that message?

PS, Adam - Typo in the title.

Basically the only references to "Trump" and/or "President" (aside from mine now) are in yours.

The first comment talks about the "Chief Executive" and my response to them basically tells them their comment is non sequitur. It could have ended there.

So, if we weren't really talking about Trump at all, then why would you bring it up, snowflake?
