Citizen complaint of the day: Playground slobs in the Fenway would never be tolerated in the Back Bay

A disgusted citizen files a 311 complaint about trash piling up amid the plantings at the playground at Peterborough and Kilmarnock streets - again - and demands:

Please do more than empty barrel- or force McKinley school to maintain. This would NEVER be allowed to continue if this was in the Back Bay!

Because the parents police the playgrounds themselves and they are spotless.

It's an under-considered tenet in 2018 America that people who already have money are able to have better communities, because they have more time for volunteerism, and for meetings to air grievances and fix things.

Can't do so much of that working 9 to 5, and 10 to 6, two jobs to survive. Everybody sleeps, be they rich, or poor.

The parents are in the park w the kids. If they see trash they throw it out, except maybe for needles

That's not volunteerism. It's mainly just showing up ..

The Fenway is a student dump where no one votes.

I think you need to check your stereotypes. They are about 20 years out of date.

The McKinley is in the South End/Roxbury Line. Why were they in the Fenway?

As far as the snark of the citizen, if the Back Bay had the facilities, yes, they’d be trashed, perhaps only stopping when citizens complained.

Mckinley has 3 locations. One is on Peterborough right next to the playground.

This one, and its abutting playground, is on Peterborough St across from Restaurant Row.

The McKinley has five different programs in three different buildings, only one of which is in the South End/Roxbury area. Two of the buildings ~are~ in the Fenway, one on St. Mary Street, and the other on Peterborough Street.

I keep forgetting the new BPS thing of having one “school” with multiple campuses. The one I’m thinking of is by the Southwest Corridor, so it’s the first thing I think of when I read McKinley.

This isn’t new McKinley will celebrate 40 years next year and has always had 3 sites.

They've done it in West Roxbury, Hyde Park, and with the Josiah Quincy. But then again, the McKinley is a different fish altogether.

I am a Fenway resident and am in this playground almost every day with my toddler. Trash really is a big problem in that playground, and most of the litter comes from families in the neighborhood for medical treatment at Children's Hospital. It is only a few of those families who leave their litter, and perhaps it is left by the children when they come to the park alone or with nannies, but it definitely piles up.

I too frequent this playground and it is destroyed by these families they reference. Myself and other parents do constant cleaning, but there is virtually no city/school maintenance and unlike some other city playgrounds, there is minimal signage.

It is a heavily used park - and the West Fens neighborhood is long removed from the student area it once was. More attention needs to be paid.
