Do Damage doing damage outside the baseball diamond

Paul Levy says he's sure the Sox, whom he loves, meant well, but that it's time to retire the Do Damage motto because its use is spreading in ways the Sox didn't intend:

I am a referee for high school soccer games and started to hear talk this fall of “doing damage” to the other team from some of the boys on the fields of Eastern Massachusetts. They did not always mean it in the sense that Alex Cora used the term. They meant it in terms of “taking out” other players. Of course, as the referee, I would be extra vigilant and discourage any such language or behavior. But my point is that many of these games already contain moments of excess competitiveness, driven by testosterone and yelling coaches. Do we really need the extra impetus of a slogan that can that carry the message of hurting someone else?

It can’t be that hard to conjure up a more positive theme that captures the inherent competitiveness of sports without violent overtones. And when our beloved Sox do well, let’s show that we are capable of expressing joy in a manner that uplifts.
