City-sponsored fund for the poor helps few people; administrator makes more than she doles out
By adamg on Wed, 04/10/2019 - 9:12am
The Dig reports on the Trustees of Charitable Donations for Inhabitants of Boston, which makes one-time payments to poor people in particular need from its office in City Hall, but which is so little known its director now earns more each year than she hands out in donations, which recently received an audit that raised numerous questions and whose board went without enough members for a quorum because Mayor Walsh failed to name any members in his first few years in office.

God Bless the Dig
Nobody is sacred. Nobody is exempt from their watchdog status.
Donations
Example 10,000 of why donating to charity isn't worth it. It mostly goes to "overhead" and the actual needy get nothing.
Y'know ...
There are ways to check to see whether a charity is actually doing what it says it's doing. You could start here.
wat?
Maybe take the day off, Bugs.
That just isn't true. Like
That just isn't true. Like anything you need to do your research before giving $ to charities.
Great job by Dan Atkinson and The Dig but where is Globe etc?
Great report by Dan Atkinson and The Dig but where is the Globe, Herald, and the half dozen Boston TV "news" channels on this potential City Hall corruption blockbuster? We are left to rely on something called the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism and The Dig?
I used to chuckle at the description of the Menino years as "scandal free" even though the once thriving City Hall press corps was non-existent through most of his tenure. Of course there's no scandal if nobody is looking for it.
Meanwhile, the "big guys" in the media are preparing a couple of dozen more vanilla Boston Marathon and Red Sox Opening Day stories that could be easily replaced with similar stories from the past fifty years and nobody would notice.
Atkinson used to work for the Herald
A lot of reporters used to work there. Wonder why they all left?
The Herald is bankrupt, so
The Herald is bankrupt, so they left. The Globe is only around because of John Henry needing a hobby for his wife and getting paid $$$$ by PR firms to regurgitate their press releases as columns.
UHub does more original reporting than the Globe does these days!
EXCUSE ME????
LPH is the most important person in Boston! Boston Magazine said so, so it must be right!
I have very like many important duties like yesterday I was at in the Front Row at Fenway Park shaking the hands with the hotties that daddy employees that won the big trophy last year. Daddy gets a lot of trophies!!!!
I'm going to instruct Adrian Walker to do a story the next time he comes in on time when I'm there to do a story about how proud we are to have white ball girls again for this year that Boston is so proud to be handling the NCAAP convention to show how not racist we are !!!
Too much Freedom & 'Murica
Is my guess
Well, OK
Go down to city hall and start pulling records. This is all public data, free for the asking.
Instead of complaining about the Globe you could go become a reporter yourself.
Bravo to the Dig
Thanks & well done.
The new full board has now been appointed
The article mentions this and links to it near the end.
Sure but the previous members are still there
including of course another minister who might be a great spiritual leader but a terrible financial planner. But sure, let's have that guy provide oversight of funds....
Rev William E Dickerson

The Reverend was signing BLANK checks? What could possibly go wrong?
The administrator
Should account for WTF he or she has been doing while collecting that salary.
Restricted donations
Some funds are strictly limited as to whom/what they can give donations. I don't know if it still exists, but there used to be a charitable city fund just for widows of sailors from Charlestown. I think it was created in the 1800's.
Hollywood should make a movie
Hollywood should make a movie about the cool secret stuff that goes on inside City Hall.
Phone not working
The phone number listed on the City website is disconnected. Guess it's easier to disconnect it than repeatedly say 'no comment', 'we're transparent', blah blah blah
