Martin's Park: More than just a playground

Bloomberg BusinessWeek takes a look at the booming Seaport at sea level at a time when sea levels are rising and reports that the newly opened Martin's Park, in addition to serving as a memorial playground for Martin Richard, is also the first in what could be a series of raised surfaces aimed at protecting the area from climate-change-induced flooding.

City officials have proposed spending up to $1 billion on a series of berms, seawalls, raised surfaces and dunes to protect the Seaport and other vulnerable parts of South Boston.

at sea level at a time when sea levels are rising

Like for the last 20,000 years.

Is that what you think?

Climate has been changing ever since the earth cooled.

Scientists have not figured out what temperature the Earth is supposed to be, so until then, mitts off my Detroit steel and hamburgers. For all we know it should be warmer.

Who do you mean "we", kemosabe?

How does your supposed explanation of climate change help the parts of the waterfront that will soon be the underwaterfront?

Sea levels are rising, glaciers are melting, and there's a lot of property that may be submerged. We've kind of already decided "what temperature the Earth is supposed to be" when we built trillions of dollars of assets upon coastlines all over the world (including here in Boston, for those who don't care about anyplace else).

Saying "for all we know it should be warmer" is missing the point. Of course the Earth could be any temperature, but we're already fairly locked in to the current temperature without drastic changes being necessitated.

Boston was once covered in glaciers. Then they melted. Is the world worse off because those glaciers have melted? I would say no, and I would say that we have developed enough that perhaps we should be worried about rising sea levels, but the overall thrust is that fluctuating global temperature is not new.

The equivalent of millennia of "fluctuating global temperature" isn't what we're currently experiencing.

We're currently headed for about 20,000 years of temperature change...in less than 100 years time.

We're currently headed for

Perhaps you may not have noticed that EVERY SINGLE GLOBAL WARMING PREDICTION HAS FAILED MISERABLY

Every single one.

Yet you all keep saying dumb things like "we are headed for" and "in the next 100 years".

Give it up. Your market of ding dongs who buy that crap is saturated.

You’re wrong.

You’re so far off base you’re in the right field stands. There’s no clear path for me to help you understand reality. That’s how far gone you are.

that I pwn some anonymous jackhole on the internet as badly as you just did yourself. If there were any justice in the world, there'd be a link to this comment next to your name on every post you ever make. Ad homs based on your impeccably sourced evidence from The Daily Caller? Sure, I'll carefully rebut every point they make, with the help of this Geocities page I'm about to cite. Better be careful how you come back, though, 'cause I'm rubber and you're glue.

Is that rising seas will destroy lots of property whether you want to jerk off about the last ice age or not. Get your head out of your ass.

I bet you’re the kind of person who says “I can’t understand why” something happens or someone thinks something when in reality you just are too lazy to try to understand.

Keep politics out if it, and things are good. Someone insists on pontificating that those who think opposite they do are morons for their way of thinking, which they don't understand, and I'll get ornery, even if I deep down inside agree with them.

Keep politics out of it, but you HAVE to hear about MY RELIGION without questioning it.

I guess that works if all your "partying" is with the old guys at the KofC.

Apparently you’ve never gotten into an argument with me.

That said, you’re probably a bowl of laughs at cocktail parties, yourself.

You are a very lazy, selfish and ignorant person. The planet will be better off without you and you will not be missed.

He'll be dead of old age before Miami is underwater, much less before the real catastrophe starts. One only hopes he had the decency not to reproduce and shoulder his kids with what's coming.

Climate change has gone into hyper over drive is what’s troubling.

From the same think-tank that worked to disprove the impact of second hand smoking so you KNOW the science behind this is solid.

Smoke more cigarettes please. They're good for you.

From the same think-tank that worked to disprove the impact of second hand smoking

The climate guy was still hilariously dead wrong no matter what think tank wrote the piece.

Is the climate guy magically correct because a think tank downplayed second hand smoke? Did the East river rise 10 feet because a think tank downplayed second hand smoke?

Think before you type.

Anthony Watts is a buffoon, a non-scientist who runs a blog that is home to every manner of climate change denial and pseudoscience. It specializes in repeating arguments that have been debunked many times. Many of its contributors think that they are very serious and very clever; it's like Dunning-Kruger Central.

Here's a more recent report from actual scientists on sea level rise over the last 2500 years. Summary: it's higher than at any time during that period, and it's accelerating. There is also a graph from another report going back 20,000 years, and 10,000 years into the future. Sea level was indeed rising for the first 12,000 years of that period; there was an ice age going on. Then the Holocene began, and sea level was almost constant until around 1900, when it began to rise at an ever-increasing rate.

Seattle was built on a mud flat, and people wanted flush toilets and sewers and water. The answer was to raise the city by the equivalent of one story. They did this by coffering the streets and filling them. That's why the underground levels of buildings in Old Town have foyers in them - that was once the entry floor.

There is little or no reason that this cannot be done in the seaport. Just make the building owners pay for it.
