Bloom off the rose: Orange Line riders now enslobbening new cars just like the old ones
By adamg on Wed, 10/30/2019 - 9:46am
As the new Orange Line cars become more familiar, more like home, riders are beginning to treat them just like the old cars, as Liz Lemongrab discovered this morning in car 1409. At least the seats on the new cars make it easier to tell if a liquid's been spilled on them.

idk
if Lemongrab is really that lady's last name but it's awesome.
Washington DC
sad... in Washington DC they don't allow drinks or food on the Metro Trains...
I would be totally in favor
I would be totally in favor of this.
So many mornings, I'll have someone near me, with a big full dunkin precariously perched so that they continue to use their phone.
I just watch, waiting, waiting for it to spill all over me.
A noble spirit
enslobbens the cleanest man.
In the DC area...
Food and drinks are banned from subways. I had a coffee once and got on the train and some woman scolded me for having it. DC also takes a different approach to general cleanliness in regards to public property as well though.
See!
This is why we can't have nice things!
All of the filth in DC is contained in a residence at
1600 Penn Avenue..
If you think it's "contained"
If you think it's "contained" to 1600 Penn Ave (or even to one branch of government or one party), you're kidding yourself.
Eating on the subway is gross
Eating on the subway is gross and inconsiderate. Who the hell cant go 12 minutes without eating? The type of person who eats Pringle’s for breakfast I guess.
Eh, when you have a commute
Eh, when you have a commute that consists of a bus to a train to a train, it gets way over 12 minutes. I've definitely had my commute time be the only chance I can eat breakfast before work, so I'm not going to judge when someone is scarfing a bagel or drinking coffee on the train. (Dropping trash or dumping chips on the floor? Absolutely will judge.)
sometimes
The subway ride is literally the only moment some people have to sit and eat something.
I know that's not the case for everyone, but I've definitely been in that position before.
Eating and makeup on the T
I often see people eating what almost amount to full meals on the T. With utensils and everything. This is as ridiculous as women I frequently see putting on full faces of makeup on the T with large amounts of accouterments that rival an artist's palette. What a lack of decorum. If people seriously do not have time to do these things in a more appropriate setting they really need to manage their time better.
I'd rather have eating and
I'd rather have eating and makeup than fingernail clipping. Ewwww...
do you think
anyone really wants to do their makeup or eat a full meal on the T?
do you think it's a daily goal for people? especially with judgmental busybodies like yourself staring down at them?
Probably
They seem fine whacking people with their backpacks, playing headphoneless videos at full volume, and throwing potato chips about the car, so it's hard to tell what people think constitutes a fun commute.
...and...
waiting til literally the last second (right before the doors close) to get off the train. I blame tide pods for that one, though.
Yes
"Do you think anyone really wants to do their makeup or eat a full meal on the T?"
Yes. People essential don't do what they don't want to. I mean, you COULD get up 15 minutes earlier to put on your makeup instead of doing it on the train. Or not wear any at all. See what I mean?
in your experience, maybe
it is possible to have an extra 15 minutes.
maybe these people have kids, maybe they dont get home from work the night before until very late and need that extra 15 minutes of sleep or solitude in order to not go insane, maybe they have no space of their own at home to put on makeup but being able to keep their job depends on arriving made up and ready to go, maybe a lot of things are going on in their lives that aren't going on in yours.
yes, eating strong smelling or messy food on the T is not ideal, I also find it unpleasant.
but someone in their seat doing their makeup on the literally affects no one else, and trying to shame those people leans real hard into classist nonsense.
someone at some point has had empathy with you, so try some empathy with others, not everyone's life is like yours.
also, David Foster Wallace's 2005 Kenyon Commencement Speech is a good read to illustrate what I mean: https://fs.blog/2012/04/david-foster-wallace-this-is-water/
It's something about the look of putting on makeup...
It seems so personal that it's creepy to see someone doing it on the T. I don't mean a quick lipstick touch-up, or the perfunctory-ness of trying out makeup in a department store. But the whole face thing that I see women do on trains. It's like getting dressed or something that should be done in private. Not that it's the end of the world or anything, but I certainly wouldn't do it.
you say it yourself
that's your opinion, not everyone feels the same way nor do they have the luxury of being able to do certain things in private.
which, come on, makeup needs to be done in private? what year are you in?
are you similarly offended by ladies' ankles and necks showing past labor day?
keep in mind plenty of stuff you do in public probably pisses people off or grosses them out, so chill out a lot.
You know why some eat on the T?
Something to do with getting between their job, their other job, classes, etc.
That's why.
Others are just slobs, but having been that person with no lunch break, any off clock time is eating time.
Nonsense
This is nonsense. I once worked two jobs (a full time and a part time), plus did volunteer work, and even managed to squeeze in a class (granted the class was only for two nights), and I STILL didn't have to resort to eating on the T. There are other places to eat and still meet all your commitments. People need to plan better or simply have a little more class.
just because
you had one kind of experience doesn't mean that holds true for everyone else.
Perhaps you'd prefer
That they drove?
If those were pizza flavored Pringles...
They are indeed unfit for human consumption..
Cue the MBTA pizza rat
Cue the MBTA pizza rat
not surprising
Often there is stuff spilled on the floor on the Orange Line, usually a river of creamy coffee with many tributaries from someone's kicked over cup.
Rode the new train again last week, one of the cars was out of service. You can't make this stuff up. Nice, smooth ride, though.
Also tonic bottles...
that keep rolling around because some pos INTENTIONALLY left it on board, and no one cares enough to pick it up until someone actually slips on it. If you eat on the train, at least take your trash off it!
Love
That you called it tonic !! Keep it alive.
this would trouble me a lot more
if I actually believed that these new trains exist, which I do not
Yes!
I ride the Orange line at least twice a day, 5 days a week. I still have not managed to catch a new train. I guess I believe they exist but, for some reason, I’m just not ever going to get to ride one.
A few days ago
I *thought* I saw one pulling out of the station in the other direction, but it's like the time I think *maybe* I saw Anthony Bourdain walking down a street in Manhattan about 10 years ago - I wouldn't testify in court to it, and it will have to remain a thoroughly unimpressive anecdote I can tell from time to time.
Boston vs DC Metro
The Transit Police in Boston don't enforce the laws against smoking and fare jumping. Do you really believe they are going to enforce rules about drinking, littering and eating on the subway?
But
I see the transit police giving out tickets for fare jumping at DTX all the time.
Boston should follow NYC's fare jumping crackdown
The MTA has been nailing both fare evaders and bus lane invaders. Two things Boston desperately needs.
I would rather
Step on a bunch of pringles than listen to 3 full volume speakerphone conversations within 10 feet of me.
so much for
That "broken windows" theory
I think 80% of the T Trains
I think 80% of the T Trains are still trashed, so broken windows theory not tested yet :)
Most of the city
is trash strewn, so why is this really THAT big of a deal?
Actually, Boston appears to be cleaner
than many cities. Perhaps not on the T, but I hear visitors say all the time that Boston is very clean. YMMV.
It’s a shame some take zero
It’s a shame some take zero pride in their city, neighborhood or home. They either expect someone else to clean up their mess or they just don’t care.
Culture
Many years ago (ok, decades ago) I was on the Tokyo subway system. The padded seats were covered with a soft velvet material. I never saw a speck of dust anywhere. Not even a microscopic litter-bit. Nada.
(And please don't bring up that old baloney about uniformed shovers packing people into Tokyo trains like sardines. Yeah, I've seen the photo too, but that happens only at one station at one time of day during morning rush hour. Their trains aren't normally like that at all -- they run frequently, like clockwork, and I always got a seat with lots of empty seats available.)
Tokyo was the biggest city I was ever in by far (and I'm originally from New York, a small town by comparison)... and the Japanese were the cleanest, most considerate people I ever met.
The trains were wonderful and spotless. The people were incredibly well behaved. Culture matters. This is something that liberals tend to implicitly deny, but it's true.
Some people are barely civilized.
Someone dropped those and just said "fuck it".
Amazing.
I'm pretty sure...
They had a lot more equally profane things to say before "fuck it".
Judgey thread is judgey.
You were there? You saw what happened?
Maybe someone bumped into them. Maybe they were struggling to get out the door at their stop because some asshole was barging into the train without waiting for people to exit first. Maybe they had a heart attack and dropped their Pringles.
This is what passes for dirty?
Man I miss Boston :(
