Heard him on Howie yesterday, lousy interview by Howie. I wanted to Laquidara stories, not Howies. But Duane called into the show and it wasn't appreciated by Laquidara. Cant blame him, Glasscock sounded deranged.
So many fond memories of 'BCN. It was our "coming of age" station with a talented crew that never failed to entertain. (Still chuckle at the Revere School of Receptionists).
Blizzard of 78 - 'BCN was on and I believe I remember someone (Laquidara) stranded at the station so they stayed on the air.
This ought to be a great show. Although I hope Glasscock doesn't show..

The cheesy "Duane Glasscock" persona was the beginning of the decline of WBCN. That is the moment it went from a serious music and news station to a gimmicky one, to compete with crassly commercial stations like WCOZ. WCOZ is little remembered now for what it was, but at the time it posed a SERIOUS threat to the dominance of WBCN. Tellingly, whenever Laqidara's
name comes up now, "Duane Glasscock" seems to be the main thing people remember, rather than the fact that he started out playing very innovative music, interviewing interesting people and pioneering one of the most progressive radio stations in the country. What does that tell you about mainstream radio listeners?
The station was great not
The station was great not only for laughs from Laquidara, but also the music, I enjoyed both. Where I worked at the time there were arguments over whether WBCN or WCOZ who played harder rock, or the disco station, (precursor to KISS 108?) should be played over the warehouse's speakers. If I remember, WCOZ was high in the ratings with WBCN.
The purer form of WBCN was pre-Laquidara when Maxanne had the morning shift and the station was devoted to an eclectic brand of music, but there is nothing wrong with a few laughs in the morning, miss that.
It was a great station and I owe my musical education to them, but in the mid-80's WFNX had become a better station.

The Golden Age of WBCN
BCN was utterly brilliant from 1968 to about 1979, with the most golden time being 1968-1975. Calling their volunteer-staffed listener line in that period was like the internet of today. One could find out what concerts were happening, where the best place to buy records was, where to "crash" if you needed a place, etc. etc. The 80s began their long, slow, torturous decline.
