Shuttered Littlest Bar

Spatch posts photos of the closed Littlest Bar:

... Fuck you, Abbey Group. Fuck you for taking away something special, wonderful and unique only to put up cookie-cutter "luxury" bullshit in its place.

May your housing bubble burst and take you with it.

Its pretty obvious you've never been to the Littlest. We have enough ridiculously overpriced high rise condos and not enough welcoming spots.

I say WTF to your WTF... think about it... this was a *tiny* local watering hole full of locals and we are squashing it to build another silly, gleaming building full of people who will immediately cry about the lack of local flavor.

Sorry to inform you, but some people enjoy having a drink after work before heading home. Not everyone who puts alcohol to their lips stars as the villan in a Lifetime TV movie. Bars are not evil. They are called pubs as a form of Publick House. Where should we congregate... Starbucks(TM)?

I do because it was something unique, something that made that little corner of Downtown Crossing special. The Littlest was a tiny little step-down bar, a fixture of the area for 60 years, a grand cross-section of citizens and regulars and friends who'd been brought in from out of town just to have a pint at The Littlest.

Nobody brings friends from out of town to visit Yet Another Condo Highrise.

The bar wood was worn to a smooth finish; so was the shelf along the back wall that served as a table. You learned real bar etiquette at the Littlest, with precious little elbow room. The gentlemen always let a lady sit at the bar; bumps and jostling were expected but always pardoned if the jostler asked for one.

It was a tiny room, no bigger than your kitchen, probably, but there you could always find some of Downtown Crossing's most colorful characters. I met a former prizefighter there once. I met an aging hippie who asked me "Are you from Ireland, too? Everybody here's from Ireland today." (She was from Beverly.)

One recent visit as I stood at the bar, a group of college-aged girls cautiously stepped in. They were on a photo scavenger hunt, and needed pictures of themselves in as many bars with as many foreign beers as possible. They raised someone else's glass of Guinness, took their picture, and scampered off giggling. "Did they take a sip of your beer?" the bartender asked. "Nah, they just wanted a picture." A shrug, and a grin. Kids these days.

Just another bar closing. I'm sure the empty condo units in this housing glut will inspire as many memories and stories as 60 years' worth of The Littlest Bar.

I don't understand your comment. At all.

While change is necessary, you have to balance it out.

"There is never enough time to do or say all the things that we would wish. The thing is to try to do as much as you can in the time that you have. Remember Scrooge, time is short, and suddenly, you're not here any more."

Hi all:

I had the pleasure of visiting the Littlest Bar 2 or 3 times (6/23, 7/12 and 7/14) over the summer before it closed and took many pictures of its interior and exterior...of course I had some pints of Guinness from there while I was photographing.

Sadly, the Littlest Bar may be closed, but my picture gallery at this smugmug gallery will hopefully bring up some fond memories...

Enjoy,
Kevin K.
