Two children fall or are thrown off garage near Ruggles; woman also found on ground

Scott Eisen reports the children, found at the bottom of the Renaissance garage off Columbus Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard, were taken to local hospitals, where they were declared dead. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was declared dead as well.

WCVB reports detectives are focusing on an SUV with two child seats found on the garage's top level.

This is the same garage, owned by Northeastern, from which a Boston College student threw himself, allegedly at his girlfriend's urging, this past spring.

According to Commissioner Gross, the children appeared to be under 5 years old. Just heartbreaking.

Praying for this family tonight. God bless these babies & mom. Heart breaking.

Let's try to focus on what happened, not on what an elected official happened to be wearing when she got the news (and never mind the "issue" is never raised about what male officials are wearing at such times).

Thank you Adam. That was way out of line. What an awful thing as a mom. Prayers up and hopefully we can prevent these incidents by doing something. Its super hurtful. The despair she felt. I can only imagine. You're a good human being Adam. Keep this up!

Michael MacNeil writes:

8 Boston EMTs, 4 Paramedics, 2 supervisors, & 1 member of Special Operations responded to the tragedy at Ruggles today. Three patients were given the best possible care we could provide, but it was not enough to save their lives. The thoughts and prayers of the men and women of Boston EMS are with the families experiencing this unspeakable tragedy on this holiday. Unfortunately, we know all too well that this kind of trauma leaves scars on first responders as well. We are committed to caring for our members and our brothers and sisters in the police and Boston EMS and the BPPA EMS division are making resources available to assist our members to process and cope with what they saw today.

Ghost networks, obscure coverage rules, no "in network" providers.

It needs to stop.

My heart is torn for this family. This might have been stopped if there were proper care.

Amen. I just said the same thing it's hard out here and for a mom to do that meant she had no choice or at least didn't know she did. The BEST team does all they can. But if the resolution to your situation is death damn. I cried because I'm a mother.

Horrible news this is the fifth homicide this year from the roof of the garage. There was one about a month ago that the information was never released to the public by the Transit Police. My prayers go out to all the victims and their loved ones.

It was definitely put out there through the media. I believe it also involved Transit PD having issue with Northeastern PD putting out some wrong information

40 year old mother and her 2 children, ages 4 and 15 months, per the DA. The mother jumped off the top of the garage after the 2 children fell. Sounds like there will be a press conference/press release later this afternoon.

This is such a terrible tragedy.

I remember when my own children were this age and life was so challenging and I felt despair and I thought of doing something like this. I was suicidal. I wanted everything to be over but I knew that if I left there would be no one to take care of my children. I didn't do it, because I worried something would go wrong, that I would send them off but would remain behind.

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year if you have money and/or family. If you don't have either, it's terrible. I see a lot of people on twitter and facebook mentioning the Samaritans hotline and that's fine, of course, but talking to someone on the phone for a little while doesn't buy your kids presents or give you a place to go on Christmas. The Samaritans don't give advice even, just a listening ear, and sometimes that's just what you need and sometimes, it's nothing at all. There are people I know who post warm welcoming messages on Facebook ("anyone is welcome at my home") and I know that's not true. They want to think it's true, but it's not. I know that good caring therapists are impossible to find when you are in need. I know that lots of families aren't supportive, and friends don't notice your anguish even when you say "I am in anguish" and that money doesn't appear out of nowhere even when you wish and wish and wish for it and you can watch all the movies you want about Christmas miracles but they don't happen in real life except maybe for people who aren't you.

But yet. You have to keep going anyway. You can't do what this woman has done, you can't. You can't blame her for what she did, but it's not your path. You have to keep going. You have to put your kids to bed and fall asleep beside them and keep them close. You have to wake up in the morning and figure out how to feed them and take lots of deep breaths and notice the blue in the sky and just keep going. You do the best you can, which isn't someone else's best maybe but it's your best. It's not the life you thought you'd have but it's the life you do have so again, just step by step through the day, get the kids fed, keep the kids running around, deep breaths until it's bedtime and then you should all go to bed and hold each other until morning. The sun will rise, and the spring will come eventually and the darkness will lighten - eventually. Just hang on until it does. It will come back, let's not fool ourselves, we've been down this road before, but until it does, it's deep breaths and step by step and doing the best you can in every moment - not the best ever, but the best you can in that moment. Look at your kids and their beautiful faces and keep going until you feel better. This is the worst time, the darkest time of the year. Just hang on.

Thank you for transforming your own suffering into a message that might lift up and help others. As someone who has been there, you have a credibility that the rest of us might not have. Best wishes to you on your continuing journey.

I cried at your message. So powerful. God will provide when satan is trying to take over.

An architect would never design a publicly accessible, loaded gun firing range for the lobby but essentially does the equivalent on the roof with a deadly, open air, all access diving platform 80-100 feet up. I recall recently (during 2019) a handcuffed suspect inside a high-rise Boston courthouse jumped from a prisoner accessible atrium balcony and was injured in an escape attempt. A poignant comment at the time asked, who designs such buildings accessible to all, including desperate prisoners, where a split second decision to jump or throw somebody over the railing could be fatal or life altering?

Look at the kid thrown off the balcony in the Mall of America. It happens all the time at sporting events with spectators falling, thrown or pushed from heights. On that note, various media reports claim both children in this case "fell" from the garage which seems to connote they had some voluntary role in risky behavior. It's more likely they were thrown or pushed. After witnessing the suspension(s) caused by inaccurate media coverage of at least one of the Boston Marathon murders, the media should tell the truth or omit the cause of death entirely since the story needs no added, misleading flair.
