There's lazy and then there's Masshole lazy

Jonathan pulled in behind this guy at a gas station on the Fellsway in Medford this morning. Once the guy got out, did he clear the roughly eighth of an inch of obscuring snow off his rear window? No. He got the gas going, then got back into his nice, warm, still running car.

Defroster?
Unless they literally just started the car, even the defroster should make relatively quick work of that, unless the person doesn't know what the square icon with the little wavy marks on it means.
My dad had a name for such people
Candy ass.
As "the rain might melt his precious candy ass if he bothered to clear the car".
2 minutes
That's all it takes. What a dope.
That’s charitable
30 seconds, tops, for today’s slop.
Height of laziness.
In any case, less time than
In any case, less time than it takes to fill up on gas.
I bet he put a space saver in
I bet he put a space saver in the street this morning because he “earned it after spending an hour shoveling” the half inch of slush.
Too lazy to hit a button
The rear window defroster would have taken care of that tiny amount of snow by the time he got to the gas station.
.
The rear defroster button? That's what it's there for.
cleaning snow off car at gas station...
is an asshole move. clean it before you drive it.
better than not clearing it at all
but unfortunately since there are zero repercussions for doing this, assholes like these will continue to be plentiful
zero repercussions?
i literally watched a car get pulled over for this this winter. the cop was clearly furious.
i'd say the problem is more rare enforcement, and less zero repercussions.
Used to be that, in Massachusetts.
you couldn't lock the gas nozzle in place. Then some people convinced the Legislature to repeal the law because they decided it was too inconvenient to have to do so.
Went back and forth
Back when I was a kid (during the late Jurassic), you could lock the nozzle open. Then it was banned. Now it's back.
I don't think that's a State thing
My understanding is that cities and towns sometimes prohibit locking nozzles. Ironically, that time the nozzle fell out of my car and pumped a couple of gallons onto the ground before I jumped out and shut it off was at a full-service station, in a town that barred self-service.
The place I go to now has all the locks removed, except for the two pumps on one lane.
It is a town thing, not a
It is a town thing, not a state thing
That's what the gas cap is for...
...silly!
And it is a good thing that we can do it!
I swear, MA was the only place I've ever been that didn't have them.
If you have a bad shoulder or hand, it is an issue to sit there and hold the thing for no damn good reason.
Banning that little handle kickstand wasn't a rational thing - more a "I can imagine it might be a problem" thing than an actual problem.
This type of person
Is the type of asshole who loudly complains about "law breaking" cyclists who should "get off the road".
Phenomenal!
You can actually tell what’s inside a persons head without knowing them OR EVEN seeing them! I’m impressed.
good camouflage
This way the cop behind him can't see that he's texting while he drives.
Which is more dangerous: the obstructed
rear view or fueling up a still-running car?
IIRC
The only danger of fueling up a running car is that you might drive away with the nozzle still in.
(Of course, I learned that from Car Talk, so...don't post like my brother?)
To be filed under "No outrage
To be filed under "No outrage too small"? Plenty of vehicles (mostly commercial) don't have rear view windows. Not a big deal if you know how to use your side rear-view mirrors.
And those vehicles have big, huge mirrors
The ones on that Honda are smaller than on the typical Subaru.
I suspect
that the kind of person who can't figure out where the "rear defrost" button is on their car, probably isn't particularly good at using their side rear-view mirrors.
Lol. Great point.
Lol. Great point.
No, big deal.
Side mirrors are NOT meant to be used for rear views when there is a center mirror available. They're meant to be aimed at your blind spots. The center rear-view mirror is meant to be used as your, wait for it, rear view.
I would wager that less than 5% of the driving population has their side mirrors aimed correctly.
Turn your damn head!
You left out the part where you are supposed to be able to turn your damn head and look, too.
Relying on mirrors alone is dangerous. LOOK.
I'm 50/50 on this one
If the car had a pile of boxes taking up the entire back seat and blocking the rear view mirror, I would imagine that no one would say "boo" about it. On the other hand, the rear defrost should have taken care of what was on the back window in short order, so perhaps the person is just lazy.
Besides not being best able
Besides not being best able to see out while driving, the other safety point behind the requirement to clear snow/slush/ice off your car before driving is so pieces don't fly off when you're moving and be dangerous to someone else.
i have a theory
the more exotic or expensive a white car is, the worse the driver is*.
so a completely covered rear window on a white honda fits pretty well.
*exemptions for branded, white work vans. they tend to be good drivers.
I, too have a theory
My theory is that Hondas are not exotic, expensive cars.
Put an Acura "A" instead of a
Put an Acura "A" instead of a Honda "H" on the identical car and it does become more expensive.
I don't think so
If I put an 'A' on a Honda, it becomes a Honda with an 'A' on it. Whether it is then the same as an Acura or not, it isn't any more expensive. Not unless the A is made of Platinum, or something.
It shouldn't be much more
It shouldn't be much more expensive, but is.
For a car that is a Honda with a trim package.
.
Not anything new or special about the situation.
There's plenty of other cases. Lexus/Toyota, Lincoln/Ford/, cars used across multiple GM divisions...
