Citizen complaint of the day: Somebody unzipped the zip tie on one basketball hoop

A concerned citizen filed a 311 report about the situation at Murray Field in Brighton:
Someone removed the zip tie on a basketball net. I recommend removing the whole hoop. Please keep the park open as many users are responsible people unlike the one that removed the zip tie.
Boston parks workers began tying up basketball hoops at city parks this week to try to keep people from playing basketball and potentially spreading Covid-19.

I scrolled through the 311 reports today and there were several complaints all over the city about the zip ties being removed. It's not working.
No surprise
You knew this was gonna happen. The virus-deniers will probably hang Home Depot buckets from the backboards, just so they can keep avoiding reality. It’s like every Blumhouse horror movie you’ve ever ignored.

Again there is no evidence that anyone has got sick from playing basketball or going for a walk on the beach.

There's no evidence because the virus is exploding in our communities at such a fast rate that it's impossible to track down who got it where. We are weeks past that.
What we do know is close contact and breathing in of infected droplets will cause it. And I'm willing to bet not everyone shooting hoops is calmly playing HORSE 6 feet away from each other.

I can't think of a worse sport to play right now except greco-roman wrestling, but you don't see a lot of that in the parks. Just so you know, the reason why there's no "data" on it yet is because this has only been going on for a few months. Listen to the smart people for once.

I saw some rims removed at a park in JP. Maybe because those rims needed replacing anyway so they figured they’d just take the crappy ones off.
I noticed that too
At the basketball courts behind the BPD HQ. The nets in the nearby tennis courts were up, though tennis is probably one of the few sports that can be played where proper social distancing can be maintained.
Southwest Corridor - DCR
Those basketball courts are on a state park - DCR is in charge of the Southwest Corridor. Saw them taking down the actual hoops near Stonybrook T as well.

Now they're going to have to take the rims and possibly the backboards down, and it's going to be months probably before they get them back up when this whole thing is over. He can say he tried to avoid having to take them down in the first place.

Just bring a pair of scissors and have someone ride piggyback to cut it. The mayor should’ve known better.
You can take down the hoops
You can take down the hoops and kids will still just play a game of off the back board. I grew up in Chelsea in the 80's and 90's around the time of the total collapse of the city. Our local park was mostly kept up by the goodwill neighbors and that basketball backboard was all rusted out and missing a rim , did not stop us from hitting the court and playing.
Tape and zip ties only work for those who take this seriously. For the rest it is all about enforcement or just showing a presence of some sort.

Kids will not be doing anything with the backboards if you took the rims off.
For years we played without
For years we played without rims... the goal was to hit the square instead. Yes there was lots of fighting over who did and did not hit the square. We also played more Bronx style (as we called it) ball where pushing and shoving was allowed.
Fact of the matter is kids adapt. Way quicker then adults. Looking back I think about the places we road our bikes and the spots where we hung out and , wow it was pretty crazy if you think about it. Years later, and I am proud to have been part of it, those courts now have rims. Those empty fields where we would BMX now have parks and play structures. Heck even if you take EVERYTHING away , give me a wall and a dense ball that can bounce and you can start a pickup game of whatever it was called. You whip the ball at the wall, it bounces back and whoever catches it gets to whip it next but if you try to catch it and miss you have to run to the wall and tag it... at anypoint prior to you tagging the wall anyone else can grab the ball and whip it at you. We did not have a court at my elementary school so we played that game out behind the building at recess.
Maybe you wouldn't play without a rim but I had no choice so we did what we had to do. These kids have that same mind set because they are kids and many of these kids are used to adapting.
I get it...
But these aren't really kids, and I'm just betting they aren't going to be balling against the backboards if the rims are taken off.

I remember the game being called different things over the years, also depending where you were. When I was in middle school in the 90’s we called it SUICIDE

Plywood Seems to Have Done the Trick
Someone cut the zip ties from the hoops by me right after WBZ did a story from the court. The next day the city had cover the hoops with plywood--a bit harder to easily remove. Several days later and it's still up. This follows a weekend in which we had well over 20 people out there playing and watching a pick-up game so I'm all for it.
Am I missing something?
Can someone please explain to me what is so all fired important and compelling about pickup basketball games that people are going to such lengths just to keep doing it at a time like this?
It really seems like one of the more bizarre by products of this virus era.
