Camelot closes down; Kennedy calls Markey to concede
By adamg on Tue, 09/01/2020 - 10:19pm
Ted Nesi reports on the first time a Kennedy ever lost an election in Massachusetts.
On the Republican side, the guy who says he invented e-mail has lost again, this time to the guy who will lose to Markey in November.
Addressing his supporters and reporters in Watertown shortly after 10:30 p.m., Kennedy pledged to support Markey. "The senator is a good man, you have never heard me say otherwise."
He added he is proud of the work he and his campaign did to support poor people in places from Lawrence and Springfield to Roxbury. "We have built a coalition that will endure," one that represents the future of the Democratic Party.

You assume Markey will win.
You assume Markey will win.
Doug Bennett has a write-in campaign all geared up and ready to snatch victory away unexpectedly.
I believe that's what is known as
a uHub deep cut. (I was long baffled by the big Melnea Cass sign before I started hanging out here.)
Doug is that you?
I miss Doug's witty and insightful commentary and retorts that used to frequent the pages of UHub. Whatever happened to he of the ugly green signs?
isn't he spending all his
isn't he spending all his time painting signs?
These damn kids have appropriated all of the green paint
for their endeavors.
Dr. Email
Lured away all his sign people, apparently.
Painting signs
Shirtless, on the sidewalk in front of his house. Popes Hill misses you, Doug!
I guess this cements Dr. EMAIL Fraud as a stone-cold loser,
as he lost in a landslide to the guy who'd lose to either D candidate in a landslide.
If only this were a reliable omen of obnoxious, ridiculous, shit-heel right-wing fakers getting thumped in November. Too bad it's MA, where R hucksters are spotted as lame "but it's aliens" jokes before they get out of the gate.
Shiva needs to find a new scam to perpetrate on the terminally idiotic, like maybe ersatz boner pills. That is his proper level. And MIT needs to refund his tuition. His running around bragging about those degrees has to sting: really embarrassing for the brand.
Normally
Post graduate degrees are paid by a stipend for doing research, there’s no tuition paid by the student. Since he was a Fulbright Scholar this would most likely be the case.
Bummer for the Fulbright Program, too,
then. Never mind the money: Shiva is the allegedly classy chum you brought to the party who then got so drunk he shit in the punch bowl and then fucked the host's poodle on top of the bed with all the guests' coats.
(Tick 'em off: nakedly idiotic nuisance lawsuit, loathsome race-baiting of Warren, love of white supremacists, "deep state" covid conspiracy theories. What an unmitigated turd of a human being.)
"You brought that asshole?" Oooooh, awkward, Fulbright! You haven't unfriended that guy yet, MIT?!
He was a *left* wing activist when I knew him at MIT in the 80s
involved in causes such as divestment from South African apartheid. I do not understand the path he has taken since then.
I have friend who is well-educated and I once thought
to be an intelligent, empathetic soul. He now spends his days posting crazy, hateful, truly nutso conspiracy-theory bullshit on social media, citing Russian propaganda and white nationalist fringe sites.
Somewhere, somehow, he just went off the rails, over the falls, and downstream into the maw of a volcano. Sad and baffling, and he's not some bitter old dude, where that kind of turn is more commonplace: he ain't even 40.
Prior to this
How often did he get laid?
Have you seen the polls lately? If you are attracted
to college-educated women, as my friend certainly is, being a raving right-wing loon is kryptonite, like having rotten garlic breath that can be detected at 20 feet.
But with a face mask, you can
But with a face mask, you can now enjoy all the garlic you please
I imagine more than one person has put on a
face mask and realized they need to work on their dental hygiene.
Thompson nailed it,
80 years ago. If they feel undervalued or don't get their due, even the well educated will be lured to dark places. https://harpers.org/archive/1941/08/who-goes-nazi/
Holy MFing crap! And incredible piece.
Thank you for sharing it.
Indeed
Thanks for this, Aaron. Great read, and pertinent to our times. It's amazing how something written in 1941 can see so contemporary.
Is he white?
If he's a straight white man, I'm gonna guess he was at least in part the victim of efforts to manufacture and weaponize grievance in that demographic. When you don't have what you think you should have (or, y'know, the world is objectively a shitty place) because reasons, and you've been told all your life that things should be better than that for people who look like you, it's pretty easy to fan the flames of that grievance and aim it at scapegoats.
I've seen plenty of what you're talking about, like
in every other dude I grew up with in my shitty nowhere Masshole hometown who didn't get up and out. That's the hard core of Trump's base: white guys without a college education who could be convinced that their disappointing fate should be laid on the brown people, not automation, outsourcing, the decline of organized labor, and other not-dead-simple issues.
But this friend is non-white, educated, prosperous, and in person, a very sweet, gentle guy. Old friends and acquaintances are genuinely perplexed by his turn here. It's troubling, like maybe a symptom of a more serious problem.
Ouch
Yeah, that sounds a little more...organic. You have my sympathy.
Yikes, chalk that up to
Self hate and assimilation, which is also more common amongst minorities than people think.
It helps if your campaign signs look like campaign signs
I had seen his signs for weeks before I realized they were for a political campaign and not for discount teeth whitening, botox, plastic surgery, or some other elective medical service.
Dr Shiva
Again the people of Massachusetts have shown their racism, by not supporting an immigrant person of color.
How as a country, can we bring Diversity to Washington DC when the Deplorables in this state refuse to elect a strong, educated POC to senate.
This state will show their true colors again, when they send the old white male Markey back, for another 6 years.
I will gladly vote for a person of color in this state:
have done so multiple times and will again, if they're qualified, forthright, ethical and aligned with my own principles.
But I will never vote for a habitually lying, racist, white-supremacist-coddling, dangerous conspiracy-theory-peddling piece of shit like Ayyadurai, ever.
Suggesting he's not another bigoted Trumpian asshole simply because he has South Asian ancestry reflects either pitiful naivety or loathsome bad faith on your part. You think you're going to con anyone on uHub with that kind of watery gruel? Simp.
Fun! Let's take your logic
Fun! Let's take your logic for a spin. If rejecting Shiva makes MA voters racist, and MA Republican voters just rejected him in the Republican primary, then Massachusetts Republicans are racists. Thank you for the service you've done the public by highlighting the racism of the Republican electorate.
Honestly, a lot of rank and file Republicans tend to have a woody for candidates displaying Shiva's kind of batshit craziness--one can't help but wonder if a white guy spouting the same nonsense might have more success within today's GOP.
Spinning the left’s rhetoric
Spinning the left’s rhetoric back against them is not allowed.
Spinning the left’s rhetoric
Spinning the left’s rhetoric back against them really, really poorly, and totally without any context, is hilarious. FTFY.
Voters in the Republican primary are "the left" now?
Is anyone even left on the right these days?
yes it is
you’re just all hilariously terrible at it
Presenting an obvious bad-faith argument is
admittedly a *kind* of rhetoric, but if you think it's clever, funny or remotely effective, ya need more schoolin', like, above the playground level.
"Shiva is a Trumpian shitheel fraud." "No, *you* are!"
See how that doesn't really work on grownups?
Question
In which primary was Shiva trounced?
I don't think many liberals voted in that primary.
Dr [sic] Shiva
"Dr" Shiva the antivaxxer gets a no from anyone who wasn't dropped on their head.
That was a really stale effort, Sean. Try harder.
Agreed. Their anti Orange bias is
outrageous.
I'm offended
As someone who was paid to switch party affiliations just to vote against Shiva in the Republican primaries, I voted against him because I wanted to buy a lot of cans of soup, not because he's a person of color!
Also, that soup is for my family.
Low turnout in areas Kennedy campaigned for?
I think the Kennedy campaign was especially hurt by the lack of voter turnout in towns like Dana, Enfield and Prescott.
Apathetic voters
Those places are full of low-information and apathetic voters.
Maybe he gave up there
Because he was underwater in the polls.
Promises promises
He vowed to drain their swamp.
He was right, though
About Markey never visiting
Recreational Semi-Off Topic Reply
You can actually visit Dana Common - it wasn't flooded. It is a longish, but easy hike and a fun family bike ride even for youngish kids if they can do the miles. Gate 40 in the Quabbin Watershed (Rt. 32A, Hardwick Road, Petersham) is the access point: https://www.mass.gov/doc/east-quabbin-reservation-bicycle-access/download
Fun video log (and geochache that's been there for eons - we hit it in 2005):

Amazing how long roads last when there is very little heavy vehicle traffic on them for nearly a century.
Conservatives the difference for Markey
In his victory speech, Sen. Markey forgot to thank all of us moderates and conservatives who took a Democrat ballot and did the unthinkable, voting Markey despite disagreeing with almost all of his current stances. He was much better in the 1970's as a pro-life conservative. At age 39, the not-ready-for-prime-time Kennedy kid would have been there for the next 50 years while Markey is fast approaching the end of US life-expectancy for white males. The lesser of two evils, if you will.
Markey already had AOC and the far-left vote solidifed. Kennedy should have disavowed support from the despicable, racist Monica Cannon Grant and tacked toward the center. He should have courted the 1,000,000+ MA voters who chose President Trump in 2016 but had little action on the Republican ballot yesterday so instead voted Democrat. This was one of many mistakes in the terribly run Kennedy campaign. Kudos to Markey campaign manager John Walsh for making a tasty lemonade. They could make a movie on the Markey story, something akin to the Peter Sellers award winning Being There. Just change Sellers character from simpleton gardener to Markey's real-life, simpleton ice cream man. Thanks for the laughs in an otherwise unfunny year.
Along with all the mice in your pocket
"All of us"? Like, both? I know that the Massachusetts Republican Party is stale and lame, but I find it hard to credit that even you were able to set aside your burning need to vote for "Dr" Shiva to cast an utterly self-defeating spite vote that will only blow up in your dumb mall-cop face.
1,090,893 in MA voted Trump. Only 230,043 voted R for Senate.
lbb, your hateful comments aside, you should be able to conclude that 860,420 in MA who voted for Republican President Trump in the 2016 General Election didn't vote Republican for US Senate yesterday, even though polls show Trump more popular than ever. Most of us voted for Markey, knowing he won't be able to do much damage at his advanced age. He will be 80 at the end of the new term if he wins in November. Try the math. Where did the Trump voters go in the Senate race if not for Markey?
Get the crying towel!
Ooooh, is that Uhub's very own hate troll calling someone else hateful? Do go on, Fishy - show me the "hateful" part.
I am trying to figure out what brain-smoothing leads you to conclude that the very same people who cast a vote for a Republican candidate in a 2016 election chose NOT to take a Republican ballot in yesterday's primary. Care to explain?
That statement right there is better than the best hand-held thermometer on the market for detecting fever.
You don't know how anyone voted but yourself, blowhard.
"Try the math" - you first!
They stayed home, ya ding-dong.
Turnout for the 2016 Presidential election: 3,271,768
(from here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_United_States_presidential_election_i...)
Turnout for the 2020 Senate primary: 1,542,738
(from here: https://www.wbur.org/news/2020/09/01/massachusetts-senate-congress-prima...)
Seems like a huge number of people voted in 2016 and not in 2020!
But sure, let's take your argument at face value, with these numbers. You're arguing that 1,000,000 Republicans showed up to vote in both elections and they mostly still decided to vote for Markey? Seems pretty dumb, considering they were apparently 2/3 of the electorate and actually voting for the Republican candidate would have led to a huge win for O'Connor (and frankly, make a good case for Massachusetts suddenly becoming a swing state).
This is hilarious
So you voted for Markey, even though you don't support him...because you think he's going to die soon?
You realize that at best, that gets you a special election for his replacement, right? And given the turnout on the Republican side for this primary, I'm not sure I'd be super hopeful about another Scott Brown here...
(then again, if you were any good at long-term thinking, you wouldn't be Fish, I suppose)
He's playing 4D chess, just
He's playing 4D chess, just like Dear Leader.
Didn't you know that every GOP voter is an accomplished political strategist, a seasoned master of nuanced political gamesmanship using his 9th grade civics class understanding of government to "own the libs"?
They've really figured it out
By voting for the more progressive candidate, they'll really show us when that candidate wins and is able to enact more progressive policies! Hopefully they don't keep voting for the more progressive candidate in every election, us on the left would really hate that!
That "D"
Stands for "dementia-nal"
Out of touch
Wow.
Did anybody ever tell you that cladding a steaming pile of bullshit with an excessive quantity of words doesn't make it less bullshit?
Pot? Kettle?
n/t
LOL
Try using facts sometime, honey.
Don't bother replying with more absolutely fake nonsense about COVID-19, either.
But, hey, I'm sure that woman in Manila will be calling back soon for a date. You can show her your passport stamp from Washington National airport.
The difference
The difference is that Swirly usually knows what she's talking about.
It's just adorable how absolutely *terrified* of AOC
that idiot righties seem to be. Their worst nightmare: a young back-bencher who is *gasp* smart, funny, tough, and a woman of color, oh nooooooes!!!111! She's marshaling the forces of the extreme left to control Biden and Markey like puppets!
Ya gotta give credit to Fox News: they've learned to spin ratings gold from easily-frightened, dumb-as-dogshit old white bigots.
Nice try, kid
You really think it would be either honest or good tactics for Markey to piss off everyone who voted for him, to court people who are almost certainly going to vote for his Republican opponent?
Also, check the difference between life expectancy at birth, and life expectancy at age 70.
But math is hard
Fishy's brain shut down after figuring out that if Markey made it to 70, he's more likely to die next year than if he hadn't made it to 70.
Mr. Blart, if you have time, the BPS needs someone to
calculate GPA.
Magoo sez
Magoo has read a lot of hate on this site. We all need to turn our frowns upside down and luv 1anudder. :-). Magoo.
