You rarely see news out of Morrissey Boulevard that will floor you

The Zoning Board of Appeal today approved plans by Floor&Decor of Atlanta to renovate the now shuttered National Wholesale Liquidators building at 729 Morrissey Blvd. into a flooring superstore.
As part of its proposal for the roughly 83,000-square-foot building, the chain says it will add more trees and shrubs around the property, put in a new MBTA bus shelter and stop, rebuild the drainage system under what will become a 118-lot parking lot - and repave the parking lot at the adjacent CVS, which both a company architect and zoning-board members agreed currently approximates the surface of the moon.
The BPDA board approved the project in March.
Floor&Decor did not say at the hearing when it hopes to open the Dorchester store.

I was pretty floored when National Wholesale Liquidators closed.
I will agree that the parking lot is a disaster though, lol.

That entire parking lot, from CVS to Lambert's, is a really weird place. I'm not even sure why I feel that way, but I do.

Like nearly all of it in front of the former Orbit's / Bradlees / NWL including almost up to the main entrance. It is a legacy of the former Capitol Supermarket building being 10 years older than the NWL store.
Also, this site is building on a filled in marsh that wasn't filled to say today's standards. That's why the old rink on Morrissey Boulevard (it was next to the one at Garvey Park) used to have the center of the ice rink dip at low tide (I kid you not).
Lambert's owns everything south of the NWL and reportedly the family is not getting along. There may not be repairs soon. Besides, any minor bumpy ride is off set by a business that gave a lot of people their first job and still to this day gives you good food at great prices.

I think most of the weirdness to me is that the Chinese restaurant, CVS, the strip, gas station, and Lamberts don't line up in any orderly way, and are alongside the access road and then Morrissey highway. I mean Boulevard.
I didn't know it was all fill, nor the other back story.
Love Lamberts. Hope they can work thru any issues.

What a weird store that was. Strange mix of inventory. A classic "junk" store not too far off from Building 19 in it's hey day.
Oh well, this national chain should spiff the place up which is good for everyone.
Nothing like Bldg 19!
NWL had the low end stuff, but at Bldg 19 you could buy gorgeous oriental rugs (real ones) and designer clothes and shoes, as well as the totally weird (life-size bust of Tutankhamen in blackface, and don't I wish I'd bought that now?), and everything/anything in between. I miss Bldg 19 at least once a week; I never miss NWL, even though I did occasionally shop there (I do miss Bradlee's, though).
