Mary Ellen spotted a flotilla of swans today in Cow Island Pond, the lake-like part of the Charles River off Rivermoor Street in West Roxbury.

1) what island?
2) which cows?

A ballet, bevy, drift, herd, regatta, a whiteness?

I have no idea why, especially given that they are mute.

I kayak through there frequently. There is no island, and there are no cows. It's a mystery.

I suppose that they could both be underwater, but there are two objections to this.

1. An underwater island is not really an island.
2. If there are underwater cows, they must be very small, as Cow Island Pond is only about two feet deep.

When folks did stuff like dug Mother Ditches for their mills, etc... I bet the stand of trees on the Dedham side used to be an island of sorts and the marsh grew in over the past 200 years.

Not only are there no cows, and no island, it's not actually a pond.

Have been seeing a similar gaggle/flock/herd/murder/bunch of swans along the esplanade (near the Hatch Shell) recently. Maybe the same ones? As many as 14 or more at a time. Seems unusual for so many to be in one area, but it's cool and Mary Ellen got a great picture.

They are invasive and should be eaten, but people aren't allowed to hunt them.
