Craigslist joins Globe in the cluelessness line

Hard to say who's worst this morning: The Globe for its continuing front page campaign on the evils of Craigslist or Craigslist's CEO for denying people advertise for sex on Craigslist:
"I would not describe any section of our site as 'sex related,' " Buckmaster wrote in response to a series of e-mailed questions from the Globe.
Can I get an O RLY, please?
The story placement kinda detracts from this well written how-they-did it story on how detectives decided Markoff was their man.

Geez, maybe the word erotic means something else, but when I click that link under services it sure seems like there are lots of people who want to help me get all dirty.

...the CEO of a site that should not have a CEO destroys their credibility, transporting them from arguable egalitarian Free Speech paragons to lying sleaze-mongers.
Craig Newmark should have this guy smacked across the room. Watch for the forthcoming CL gigs ad, "Wanted: Enforcer."
On second thought
I think this Globe article is skewed more than ideal, but in another sense is an example of something good: rather than sensationalizing some tragic event, instead starting to ask what we can learn and apply from it.
However, we do have to be careful in these situations in general. Societal risk comes from these moments of punctuated public attention, in that they enable politically things that should *not* be done as well as they do things that *should* be done. Here, I think the news media plays a major role in contributing to public rationality, and in reigning in some potential ill-advised measures that might otherwise be pushed through.
Have had great luck with CL
and hate to see its reputation shot through like that. I know of people who found great used cars, amazing cheap furniture, and killer doctors through the site!
CL CEO blew it
Were I a reporter who didn't know a priori what I was reporting on, was researching, took a look at the site, and then had the CEO BS me in response to interview questions... that would definitely reinforce the "wretched hive of scum and villainy" perspective on CL in my mind.
