Taco, Thai and pizza fans better be on alert when they double park on Centre Street in West Roxbury

Police say: Stop double parking on Centre Street

BPD District E-5 is sending out fliers to Centre Street businesses to post in their windows warning of a crackdown on double parkers along West Roxbury's main commercial drag.

BPD isn't naming names, but customers of certain restaurants near Manthorne Road and Hastings Street might want to consider parking a block or so away to pick up their food.

Saw someone doubled parked in front of Los Amigos around 7.

We have the (social) technology. Price the parking on those few blocks of Centre high enough to induce turnover. Then parking stops being a lottery—it’d end the windfalls for the random cars that get spots, lighting-bolt losses for the ticketed, and the waste of police time and energy to enforce this.

Or just do very short parking, like the 10 minute donut spot further down centre.

(Or maybe redesign the street so it’s easier to get there without driving...)

lol you're joking right

they'd have to come aaallllllll the way out of their station, to their cars in the parking lot, and drive the whoooooooooole 10 yards down the road, and double park also, to ticket somebody, and I mean, that's soooooo much work.

1. Cops don't write meter parking tickets (thankfully, because if they did it would probably never happen--kind of like how they never ticket people for double parking!), 2. In practice, most people would rather pay a modest fee than risk even a remote chance of getting ticketed, so you probably wouldn't even need much enforcement in order to free up the spaces.

It took this long for them to wise up to something happening a block away from the station? Jesus christ

Instead of

Taco, Thai and pizza fans better be on alert when they double park,

maybe you could tell them they better not double park? Your headline sort of implies that it's OK to do it if they're careful to not get caught.

Better solution here would be to provide short term parking spots at regular intervals along Centre Street, for pickup, delivery, and quick errands. The whole commercial area should be metered at least for peak usage time. This would be a boon to the businesses and is the only viable solution to chronic complaints dating back many years of insufficient parking. When there is excess demand for a scarce resource, you charge for it rather than leave people to fight over it.

It's great that those places are doing well (you forgot Mediterranean and Vietnamese on your list) but the double parking, which I think is primarily delivery service drivers, is a problem.

And, true confession, I have gotten stuff there, for my wife, while also picking up a burrito for the kidlet at Los Amigos and Indian food for me at Himalayan Bistro, but I was thinking of the area down the street by the Real Deal, where the sidewalk bumpout seems to present a fun challenge for many people: What is the most ridiculous angle I can park my SUV there so that it sticks out as far as possible into the right travel lane?

Parking is more available down there in my experience whereas up at the Belgrade intersection, that two block strip is way more likely to be double parked. Partially because there's more stuff but also because the north bound side of Centre St. loses parking due to the Belgrade turning lane after the bike store.

Why not add the shaken up crab fans and whatever other business people are in such dire need to block 50% of the Adams rotary in Roslindale for?

Generally speaking, people are driving relatively slowly around the corner and there's not the same level of danger as on Centre St which, for better or worse, is a much faster road coming out of the rotary or off of Belgrade.

I'll add that a big advantage Roslindale 'downtown' has vs. West Roxbury is the density and addition of more municipal lots. There's no public lots near Tres Amigos/Himalaya/West on Centre similar to the ones behind Citizens and up by the train station. There's also just a lot more people in walking to distances to all of it (vs. WR where someone who would walk to Real Deal might not walk to Himalaya, etc...)

I will believe the enforcement when I see it. I walk up to this section of Center Street often and have seen the Police move around double parked cars. The traffic enforcement on Center is a joke.

I was once blocked in by someone double parked at that location. I hit the horn to get him to move. He came out, yelled at me 'can't you see I have my hazards on?!' After that, he suggested to get out of the car to make him move. Leafy West Roxbury.

Gee, where do these people think they are; Southie?

Laughable that the police will "enforce" anything but showing that drivers can do whatever they want whenever they want. They don't even bother to direct traffic when they are on details.

What's even funnier is that Los Amigos has a "stop the road diet" sign in their window and that business is one of the worst offenders. I now give my $ to the 2 other Mexican restaurants in Rozzie and HP. Same for the True Value in WR. You make your $ off me but don't care that your customers have to take their lives in their hands every time they are on Centre St?

If the businesses against the road diet are so concerned that losing 16 public parking spaces will make their businesses go under they should offer to buy them at market rate. The city can then use that money to enact some sort of road diet safety measures and the businesses can use their privately funded spaces for customers. Win-win.

True Value has been losing at least $500 per year from me since the opposed the safety plan. Same deal for several of my neighbors.

Anyone who thinks they benefit more from 16 unmetered (read: low turnover) parking spaces thank from being on a corridor where people actually want to bike and walk around frankly deserves to lose that business.

Almost all of the double-parked cars (there were two in a row on Sunday night) are from Uber Eats (etc) drivers. I get that they are in a rush and only need to be there a short time, so if there is no one telling them to move along, they will keep stopping there and blocking the lane. If they know that the cops will be by to hassle them, they'll make more of an effort to stash their cars somewhere else.

I'm sure this is why some in the neighborhood are opposing a road diet for Centre St. They'd be losing their precious double parking.

Regular parking is not the issue. It's the combined loss of illegal double-parking and illegal high-speed passing. Both would be prevented by a road diet.
