Citizen complaint of the day: The North End is a pig sty tonight
One outraged citizen pounds out a 311 complaint about conditions in the North End today:
The North End is a disgrace today and a clear example of how we don't have good representation! Besides the residents living in filth I am sure the tourists will appreciate how we our forced to live. Wake up and figure it out City Hall. Next trash day is Monday! DISGUSTED in the North End!!
A calmer, if still disgusted, citizen adds:
Guys please if there's anyway to send a trash truck through tomorrow at the north end is a mess every single street has a multitude of trash bags everywhere. Obviously no one knew that there is no trash pick up today people think that you're just gonna come tomorrow and between the rats and the homeless people picking through in this neighborhood is a disaster. Please please please come pick it up and help us
Another peeved North End citizen, suggests the city either do a better job of alerting North Enders not to put their trash out on, you know, a well known national holiday, or just pick up the trash on Friday rather than waiting until Monday.
Once again the entire neighborhood did not get the memo that trash would not be picked up on Thanksgiving day. And instead of giving us a delay day trash will now be sitting on the street until Monday morning. I hope you will send trucks out tomorrow morning to pick up all of the residential trash. I don't know why you haven't figured out the north and needs a one day delay on Thanksgiving.

The north end is always
The north end is always filthy.
So, this is news?
So, this is news?
Yuppies are no doubt responsible
They are clueless about trash etiquette. Equally responsible are the absentee landlords who probably grew up in the North End. Now they collect the rent and pay for the Land Rover lease and the place in New Hampshire.
Oh, of course
This never would have happened in the old North End.
Apparently so is Southie;

Stay filthy
My North End friends
Why don't they have delayed pickup?
I don't understand why the North End would not have a one day delayed pickup. It not as if folks can leave the trash in their yard for the extra time....Other residential neighborhoods have delayed service; the North End should as well.
The city has an app called
The city has an app called Boston Trash Schedule & Alerts that might help alleviate the scheduling confusion around holidays if it gets widely adopted.
The app is the only way I
The app is the only way I knew I had to take my trash with me when I left for Thanksgiving (that was a fun trunk smell)
Newbie Meter
If anything this is showing just how many newbies have moved in and are clueless about trash collection in Boston, let alone surrounding cities. Maybe they came from a rural environ where you make a trip to the town dump on Saturdays.
Anyone who has lived in Boston at least a year, or better stated, anyone who actually asks questions and pays attention, knows that city trash collection is one day late when there is a major holiday. Monday holidays see everyone delayed a day with catch-up managed by Friday, usually. When the holiday happens mid-week or late in the week only those people that normally get collection ON or AFTER the holiday are impacted by the delay.
Yes, some Boston neighborhoods see a daily collection but even that has some limited holiday exceptions.
Didn't get the memo? Talk about entitlement.
The real problem here
Why do people put their garbage on the curb at all?
Most similarly densely populated and tightly structured European cities that I have visited have congregate disposal areas positioned throughout the neighborhoods. Got a full bag? Take a short walk, or drop it off when you walk the dog. Recycling areas are there, too. They are available 24/7 and emptied regularly.
A public health person in Barcelona told me that they help keep vermin out of the houses since there is no garbage build up on private properties.
A Dutch friend has the perfect trash and recyclables collection…
… I’ve ever seen. Underground cement wells that hold hold small dumpsters. You drop your bag through a slot anytime you want. An electric vehicle comes and quietly lifts out the containers and replaces them with empties.
His is 20 feet from his front door.
Stuff that others might want to reuse can be left on the platform as well as large things like furniture.
Awesome concept!

Not really practical outside superdense areas
I would imagine that system would work best only in very high density urban areas like the North End, or in housing complexes, but would be mostly impractical elsewhere. It's probably not a coincidence that Barcelona is almost 3 times as dense as the city of Boston and more than twice as dense as Somerville.
Let me introduce you...
...to the concept of a "transfer station".
Outside of "very high density urban areas", it's quite common for there to be no trash pickup, and for households to be required to haul their trash to a transfer station, unless they're willing to pay someone else to do it for them. These are low density areas, and "impractical" or not, it's what happens.
Farmland
There is a very rural area in France (it's southwest of Lyon) that also has centralized spots for recyclables and garbage. I'm pretty sure they keep the compostables since it's farmland. The group trash/recyclable bins are at intersections of larger roads and the small lane and a half roads. I suspect the trash trucks don't go down the smaller roads.
Nonetheless, I think this could work in any type of density. It just takes a change of mindset.
Some neighborhoods do get trash collection..
… on holidays. You have to check with the city to know if yours does or doesn’t.
This is a garbage take
This is a garbage take
Everyone knows…
That’s just not true.
Well, sometimes that’s true and sometimes it isn’t. I got my normal Friday pick up today. The previous contract, up until a couple of years ago, had pickup on the normally scheduled day even if that day was a major holiday.
You have to check your specific neighborhood’s schedule.
Newbies?
The North End has always been a mess. I distinctly remember a girl in the neighborhood falling and seriously hurting her leg over 20 years ago because some restaurant had tossed their rotting tomatoes on a dark slippery sidewalk.
She didn't have much recourse because her friend knew the cousin of the owner's landlord and well...let's just say she was advised against making a stink.
I'm Italian but that entire neighborhood has always repulsed me.
Any neighborhood that is as
Any neighborhood that is as congested as North End and China Town is always gonna have swill in its streets as long as government is working from home or using lack of workers due to Covid as an excuse.
