Wu re-appoints Janey's two School Committee picks

Mayor Wu today re-appointed Lorena Lopera and Rafaela Polanco García to the Boston School Committee, to serve at least through the end of 2023.

Acting Mayor Kim Janey had appointed the two, both themselves BPSA parents, in July, to fill the terms left vacant when Alexandra Oliver-Dávila and Lorna Rivera resigned over the Westie-whites text messages the month before.

Because Janey was acting mayor, their terms had lasted only as long as hers, which ended with Wu's swearing in on Nov. 16.

Separately, tomorrow is the deadline for Boston residents to apply for two four-year seats on the School Committee.

Boston is the only community in the state in which School Committee members are appointed by the mayor rather than elected. In the election that put Wu into office this month, voters also overwhelmingly voted in favor of a return to an elected School Committee. However, the vote was non-binding; returning to elected school officials would require action by the City Council, Mayor Wu, the state legislature and Gov. Baker.
