in the mechanism behind this. Are Juncos spontaneously-generated meteorological phenomena? Do they live in a larval state underground, only emerging when snow is coming? Or do they just lay low, perhaps disguising themselves as starlings, until they see the lights on the old John Hancock flashing red, and reveal themselves in all their snow-bird glory?

I'm pretty sure when it snows, juncos form from the snow. And then make more juncos that cause more snow, and make more juncos, and so on.

it all makes sense. Very disturbing. Similar to a nuclear chain reaction, with the juncos playing the part of slow neutrons. No wonder they call it bombogenesis.
