I've become a big fan of Three Dog Night during the past several years. I was disappointed to hear they'd be in town the one night I couldn't make it. And, for free, even!
They had a great "live" album out a couple years' ago; if you're just learning about them now, it's worth checking out.
The lyrics to their songs, alone, are worth checking out. (They didn't write the most-bizarre ones, though.)
I remember hearing the defintion of a 3 dog night. It refers to the use of dogs to keep warm at night by those that wandered the Outback of Australia. The mention of 3 dogs meant that it was a particularly cold night. I am a fan of theirs. I wish I had caught the show.
I heard that one as well, but with a colonial American source. (Maybe there's some truth to it - "British Material" wise?) Anyway, thought for some reason that they'd be here in July and was gearing up for that. Am *so* sorry to have missed them. Always loved their psychedelic close harmonies. (Mental note - be prepared for the Beach Boys concert - especially if Brian Wilson will be there.)

Quick google search shows also an Eskimo source. Hmm. Betcha we'll find the same thing translated into Finnish, Lapp, Uighur, etc.
They used to sleep in holes in the Australian outback with Dingos and if it was really cold that night, they said "it's a three dog night." The band I had no idea was still together. I haven't kept up with them in years, but good to hear they are still playing.

I rather enjoyed this version, updated for the ages.

They have lots of great ones there, including an original "Eli's comming" that was aired long before MTV. Like, in the 60s, man!
