Fenway cineplex suddenly ends
By adamg on Mon, 02/13/2023 - 3:13pm
That the Regal Cinemas have closed was not the biggest surprise - we knew it was going to happen - but the way it suddenly shut down this weekend was - some people had pre-bought tickets for the latest Ant-Man and the Wasp movie and everything. Also, you can tell the people who own Regal don't know Boston based on what they consider is in the vicinity of the Fenway.

I know where one cinema is
Isn't there a cinema 10 miles away tucked in a pass between the tall mountains outside Boston ?
LOL I worked at the theater
LOL I worked at the theater that is purportedly "in the vicinity" when I was in college. I went to college in Worcester.
good riddance
it was a dump.
lol
and how long until the Solomon Pond Mall crumbles.. last time I was there, it was pretty grim. Like the Square One Mall.
I doubt it has anything to do with "vicinity of the Fenway"
It's just that the Regal at Solomon Pond Mall is the closest location in the chain, and they're not going to refer customers to a competitor. (Bellingham is almost the same distance, and closer from other parts of Boston.)

http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/10381 says AMC had to sell this theater to Regal as part of an antitrust deal when they bought Loews. Does this mean it can't reopen as an AMC?
This leaves only one movie theatre within Boston city limits
AMC (originally Loews) Boston Common.
Two more are supposed to reopen later this year -- Alamo Drafthouse (formerly Showplace Icon) in the Seaport, and AMC at North Station (formerly ArcLight), but I've seen no dates announced for either of these yet.
Don’t forget…
AMC South Bay is also within Boston city limits. But yes, the Drafthouse and AMC’s revival of the ArcLight can’t come soon enough.
And I say this as a Boston resident who happily sees most movies at the Coolidge, Kendall, and Somerville.
Not quite...
There's also AMC South Bay within the city of Boston. (And the MFA film series.)
'Til then, thank God for the fine theaters in Cambridge, Brookline, and Somerville.
The ICA occasionally shows
The ICA occasionally shows films, like the Oscar Shorts this weekend.
What about the universities?
"Best International Films of 2022" This week at the MFA
The MFA Film program is not back to what it was in the Before TImes, but they are showing a few "Best" international films starting Thursday going through the weekend:

Oh, I like the sound of the Alamo Drafthouse Experience

AMC South Bay
To be fair, there is an AMC at South Bay. But that makes only *two* theaters within Boston city limits. Sad!
Yeah, I totally forgot about South Bay
I've never gone to a movie there, it's not a place I often walk or bike by, and the demise of newspaper advertising for movies and movie theatres makes me much less aware than I used to be of what cinemas are still open.
have you ever seen 'survivors remorse':
Prediction
When AMC reopens the Arclight at North Station, the Boston Common will soon be gone. There’s sadly just not enough business to support this use of prime real estate. From the escalators to the non-reclining seats, Boston Common needs a lot of renovation to keep up with the times, and AMC doesn’t have the cash to do it.
I like the seats in the AMC
I like the seats in the AMC Boston Common 19. As a matter of fact I want them to go way back to the wooden seats with a flimsy leather cushion of my youth. That's the cinematic experience.
If I wanted reclining seats I'd stay at home and watch bootlegs on TV. Heck these days you can stream bootlegs to your TV. You don't even need a wandering DVD seller anymore.
I've had a business try to
I've had a business try to tell me that they have an office "very close, in Lowell". I live in Cambridge.
Same county.
Same county.
Well, the jury duty officials
Well, the jury duty officials seem to think it’s reasonable to demand that someone from Cambridge or Framingham without a car show up in Lowell at 8 am…
Definitely ask for a reassignment!
I had a similar situation and was able to move closer very easily.
Same. I was able to get it
Same. I was able to get it transferred to a court in Somerville near Assembly Row, much easier for me to get to.
But it says right on the
But it says right on the postcard "inconvenience is not a hardship"!
Of course that's just to scare you, and in practice it's easy to switch locations. You can even do it yourself online without having to convince a person.
What, you're too good to walk
What, you're too good to walk?
Regal Fenway Cinema seems to be open now.
It seems to be open now.
Please tell us more
When did they reopen? Did you go in? Are they advertising on their marquee?
Not sure, nope, and dunno. I could be wrong
They appeared on Google as having had a fairly full slate of movie showings this weekend when I googled "films around me." This morning if you search "Regus Fenway," Google itself shows them as still having showings today, but of only two films: four showings of Scream VI and one showing of "Come Out in Jesus' Name." Then COIJN allegedly goes to heaven on Tuesday and for the rest of the week they're supposedly only showing SVI. So maybe somebody's running a pirate cinema, or it could be residual data that hasn't yet been deleted from Google's movie listings.
