Retired Boston cop accused of attacking DC cop with a chair in failed Capitol coup

The FBI today arrested a former Boston cop on charges he didn't just bust into the Capitol with fellow coupsters on Jan. 6, he rammed a chair into a police officer running after a pepper-spraying member of Y'all Queda, then began beating the cop, only the cop got the better of him and knocked him to the ground.
Joseph Fisher, 52, of Plymouth, retired as a Boston Police canine officer in 2016. He was arrested today in Plymouth on felony charges of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder, the US Attorney's office in Washington reports.
He's also charged with misdemeanor counts of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, acts of physical violence the Capitol grounds or building and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.
According to the US Attorney's office:
Fisher entered the U.S. Capitol Building at approximately 2:24 P.M. on January 6, 2021 via the Senate Wing Door on the North side of the U.S. Capitol. At approximately 2:38 P.M., Fisher was in the Capitol Visitor Center’s Orientation Lobby where an altercation began between a U.S. Capitol Police Officer and other rioters. As a U.S. Capitol Police Officer pursued a rioter who had deployed pepper spray, Fisher pushed a chair into the Capitol Police Officer. Fisher then engaged in a physical altercation with the Capitol Police Officer. Shortly afterwards, Fisher exited the U.S. Capitol Building.
At least two current Boston cops also traveled to Washington for the failed coup, although BPD says neither actually entered the Capitol. One was fired for Twitter posts before and after the rioting that called for a civil war.

But one of the advantages of living in the US, as opposed to, say, Russia, is that if you're a citizen by birth, you can't be stripped of your citizenship. If they could do it for this guy, what's to stop a future government less kindly disposed to civil liberties from doing it for political reasons?

Citizenship does imply being alive. There are no dead citizens. When the Federal gov't or a state gov't causes a person their death then they are effectively terminating the citizenship.
Imprisonment can be used to impose the conditions of slavery or involuntary servitude per the 13th Amendment. When the rights of citizenship are either temporarily or permanently suspended then citizenship is a label but nothing more.
Completely agree about the issue of politics reasons for suspending civil liberties. The workaround for state and federal dictators would be to use laws to turn citizens into criminals. Then the rights of citizenship can be stripped away.
When state court judges refused to throw out arrests based on solicitation (i.e., entrapment) of gay people in the 70s and before, that was a method of suspending the rights of citizenship simply on the basis of a person being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not for actual committing a crime. But since the arresting vice cop would claim that the defendant enticed them into criminal sexual contact judges usually went along instead of throwing the case out.
So while technically there is nothing in the Constitution that permits any US government from revoking citizenship, there remain ways to effectively suspend citizenship and make it a hollow label.

One significant difference is that a non-citizen convicted of a crime is likely to be deported after serving their sentence; an American citizen won't be.

Another example of why cops have the easiest job in the world. In no other line of work can someone without skills get paid so much and retire so ridiculously early.

Just like everyone else if they don't like the job, rules, etc. they CAN go and get another job. But they don't because where else will they get a badge, gun, $100k+/year and a license to be a dick after 27 weeks of training?
Police reform isn't a bad word; it's needed for us and the police force. Remember, we pay their salaries - they aren't above you or me; they're just above the law.

Long before Jan 6 the Capitol Police carried the reputation of being glorified mall cops, and that's among the residents of Washington, DC rather than from other cops.
I had also heard that they have a pretty high turnover rate because it's routinely used as a stepping stone to get into another policing or federal agency job.
