Ho, ho, ho: Who says nobody uses the new Centre Street bike lanes?

David Wean forwards this video of Jolly St. Nick getting into one of the new bike lanes on Centre Street in West Roxbury from the area of the firehouse:

“Save Centre St”
“Save Centre St.!” LMFAO
YES... Ha ha ha... YES!
I am commuting in them daily. Ruination of the neighborhood is progressing nicely.

I wonder how many red lights Santa has run so far?
Probably a lot. At least he’s Santa and not some hipster in a too tight fitting kit.
"hipster in a too tight fitting kit"
Talking point wires get crossed?
I kid, I kid!
Happy Holidays!
Ha!
You too!
Interesting take
One of our local SKY IS FALLING BECAUSE BIKE LANES Agenda 21 conspiracy scolds has the same Can o'Talking Points from internet lore that you love to parrot - including the OMGBIKERUNREDLIGHTS refrain.
I was out on my bike on Sunday. Guess what I saw her do in her car?
RUN A RED LIGHT AT SPEED.
I was waiting patiently at red light - fortunately, I didn't immediately move when I got the green because I sensed the vehicle wasn't slowing properly. She nearly took the nose off the car next to me.
She saw me there when she did it, too. Now she is somehow convinced that I got it on video (I have made no such claim) and is alternately demanding that I erase it/pleading that I don't post it next time she runs her keyboard parrot. The panic is delicious.
Maybe you should do a little, I don't know, reality check on who kills orders of magnitude more people running red lights? Naw. We know data ain't yo thing. You would rather fixate on theoretically too tight spandex santabutts.
I hope Santa is bring you a chill pill.
Happy holidays, Swirls!
However many he needs to to stay alive …
…. is fine with me.
I can’t wait till the Idaho Stop is legalized in Mass.
I still owe you that ride Lee
Lmk when you want to cash in. Happy holidays, bud!
Haha!
Happy, happy to you too, bobo!
Santa’s mandate is to keep moving …
.. at red lights.
Rudolph’s red nose.
Santa
FAKE NEWS FAKE SANTA
The real Santa would never ride in the bike lane
Just to clarify
Raw volume of travelers isn’t the proper rubric for the efficacy of a bike lane.
The number of accidents prevented is a good one.
Also
Just looking at a bike lane and saying "well no one's in it right now, so it must not be getting used" is a pretty poor way of measuring the volume of travelers.
And to clarify more
The key element of the project was to reduce the number of travel lanes from 4 to 2, with left turn lanes.
The bike lanes neither help nor harm the point, which was to make pedestrian street crossing safer. But culture wars are more important to too many people.
Sure they do
Bike lanes absolutely make pedestrian street crossing safer - in fact, they actually even make driving safer - https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/05/190529113036.htm
Waiting to hear the accolades
Many of the anti-bike lane people proclaimed to be area merchants whose business would be destroyed by the new configuration. Now that the deed is done, it would be in their best interest to start getting the word out that "Centre St is open for business and better than ever!" (I honestly want every business on that strip to succeed, so I hope they cut it with the doom and gloom and invite people to come shop and dine.)
Warmer weather
I think it's really going to pay off in the spring/summer when more people are walking and biking through there. Vehicle speed has definitely dropped significantly and most people seem to be getting used to it.
I also have to go slower in the bike lane and be wary of pedestrians or getting doored by parked cars but I can easily merge through the car traffic to reach the left turn lane. One of the main reasons I detoured around the area before was to avoid having to make a left from the old high-speed lane and possibly having to stop in it for oncoming traffic.
I drove between the rotary and Corey Street tonight
Around 6:30. There was one double parked car by the Himalayan Bistro that didn't cause too much trouble- that's my main fear traffic-management wise. I mean, maybe I would have gotten through the Corey Street intersection quicker with 2 lanes, but as was the point, driving Centre was a calm experience. The turning lanes make things a whole lot better, and if people can jaywalk more safely, that's a godsend.
